About the Item

Netherlands, 1870-1951 Constant Artz is the painter of the well-known extremely friendly and sunny scenes with a duck with young ones on the side of a ditch. He was born in Paris in 1870 as the son of the then famous painter David Artz. As early as 1874, the Artz family moved back to The Hague in Holland. And was enrolled at the Hague Academy in 1882 and then, in 1899, he was given a place as a student in the studio of the painter Tony Offermans (1854-1911). The general public mainly knows Constant Artz for his intimate duck families. He had great success with this subject shortly after 1900 and has remained so to this day. Artz mastered the play between light and shadow like no other. As a result, he was able to create new compositions again and again, using a mother duck that captures sunlight or a mysterious, dark tree or shrub. Each Constant Artz produces a completely individual image. Artz lived to be quite old and he died in 1951 in Soesdijk, but during the last years of his life he suffered from a deterioration of his eyesight. The meticulousness in the depiction disappeared to make way for a more impressionistic painting style. These late impressionist works show that Artz was a born painter.
