About the Item

The Serpent - Aboriginal Dot Painting in Acrylic on Canvas Bold dot painting with a snake by Aboriginal Australian artist Geoffrey "Pirup" Woods (Aboriginal Australian, d. 2010). A multicolored snake winds across the canvas, shown in the same colors as the background. In Aboriginal art, the snake is representative of strength, creativity, and continuity. The snake is also closely linked with the earth and creation myths, as the snake can disappear into the ground a reappear in other locations. Signed "PIRUP" in the lower right corner. No frame, but the edges are painted for a frame-less display. Geoffrey Woods (Aboriginal Australian, d. 2010) was a highly respected painter of the Wirlomin Noongar people who also painted under his ancestral name of 'Pirup'. His work is symbolic and representative of his country, drawing inspiration from the land, stories, and culture of his Wirlomin people.
