Alfredo Roldán
The waitress. Three quarter portrait. Contemporary Cubist style. Oil paint

1999

About the Item

The waitress. Oil on canvas, three quarter portrait of a beautiful waitress. Cubist style Measurements in centimeters: 122 x 48 x 2 cm / Framed: 152 x 78 x 4 cm. In Inches: 48.03 x 18.9 x 0.79 " Framed: 59.84 x 30.71 x 1.57 " Original three-quarter close-up of the surprised model at work, with the carefree and seductive air of young and happy waitresses at work. The painting is harmonious in its rich shades of blue, white, grey and violet, combined with muted, earthy tones and tints of ocher flesh. The flattened perspectives, the fractured surfaces and the graphic stylizations refer to the cubism of Picasso and Juan Gris. There are echoes of Modigliani in the treatment of his female models and we can detect an homage to Gauguin and Matisse, in his playful and sensual manipulation of color. ABOUT THE ARTIST Alfredo Roldán (Madrid- Spain, 1965) is a self-taught artist who, at the age of 22, began selling his works at street markets. In 1994 he won the award granted by the City Council of Madrid with the painting “El Baño Azul”, which now hangs in The Museum of Modern Art of Madrid. That year he began to work with the renowned British dealer Sam Benady, based in Spain, owner of Sammer Gallery and Sammer Editions. In 1995 he was awarded again in the following edition of the Autumn Salon with the El Corte Inglés Award. These renowned awards opened the doors of national and international art galleries for him, where he regularly exhibits with great success ever since. In 1996 he was named a Member of the Senate “Honoris Causa” of the Academy of Modern Art of Rome. The painting Before the shower (1997) belonging to the National Museums Northern Ireland collection of the Ulster Museum, is part of The Public Catalog Foundation - BBC Your Paintings, a prestigious website where works painted in oil from public collections in the United Kingdom are collected for more than 600 years The Prior Church of St Bartholomew the Great, the oldest church in London, founded in 1123, commissioned Roldán to paint an altarpiece of the Madonna and Child. In 1999 it was unveiled in the Lady Chapel and dedicated by the Lord Bishop of London. The Spanish Post Philatelic Service has chosen nine works by Alfredo Roldán to reproduce on stamps. At Christmas 2001, this organization, together with the German Post Office, published the last stamp in Spanish pesetas and German marks and the first in euros with the image of the Virgin with Child painting. He also reproduced eight of his works on a series of stamps with the theme The Woman and the Flowers in 2003. In 2003 Ediciones Sammer publishes in a deluxe edition the book Alfredo Roldán written by the sculptor David Gamella where a large part of his work is reproduced. Alfredo Roldán feels heir to the main avant-garde movements of the early 20th century, which have defined his understanding of color and form and their application to composition. Painters like Matisse, Picasso or Cézanne are his great teachers. His figures of women (the elongated oval of the face and the empty eyes) are also very reminiscent of Modigliani. Throughout his professional career, Roldan has had individual and group exhibitions in numerous Spanish galleries and outside his country he has exhibited in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the United States, Dubai and Singapore. He has also attended numerous national and international art fairs like Art Palm Beach- Miami and Fine Art Asia- Hong Kong.
