Anton Kushaev
Untitled by Anton Kushaev - Surrealist diptych painting, acrylic on canvas, 2020

2020

About the Item

The diptych Untitled is part of the Cameo series by Anton Kushaev. Cameo (from the Old French camaieu - treasure, jewel) is a kind of gem, a carved semi-precious stone with a convex relief image. The Cameo series is formed like a poetic text. Anton is inspired by works of Russian symbolism, iconography and Soviet modernism, melting everything into a strange collage. Monuments and frames, flowers and architectural forms turn into a barely readable elusive statement. As in the poetry of Symbolism, the moods in these works are contradictory - from the desire for innovation to the use of traditional forms. The blue color that unites all graphics is a limitation and at the same time a reference to the coloristic culture of death, the surface of the chroma key and the “missing” color among the ancient Greeks. - Anton Kushaev, born in. 1983, graduated from an icon painting school, but his main inspiration has always been the visual style of metaphysical paintings and surrealism. In his artistic practice Anton continuously revises the symbolic systems of the art history, always questioning: "What is an image? How it is related to the inconceivable and where are the boundaries of the language as a structure of knowledge?" His recent solo exhibitions include: 2022 - "Frame of sorrows" / Voskhod Gallery / Basel 2020 - "Barren flower" / Szena gallery / Moscow. 2018 - "You, only after" / Szena gallery / Moscow. 2017 - "Without support" / Elektrozavod gallery / Moscow. 2017 - "Unfit place" / space "Red" / Moscow. 2017 - "Questionable basis" / project START Winzavod / Moscow.
