Allegory of Love, Cupid With Beauty in Fine Dress Carrying a Basket of Flowers

About the Item

A late 18th Century oil on canvas laid on board of a young beauty in period costume carrying a basket of flowers on her head. Presented in a very fine gilt, period 'Directoire' frame with palmette decoration. A charming depiction of a young beauty in period 18th century costume set in an idylic garden landscape with a classical urn. The young girl is holding up a white rose, plucked from the basket of blooms on her head, to smell the fragrant scent. Just visible in the basket amidst the blooms is the head and wings of a 'putti', cherub or 'amorini' symbolising cupid and that our beauty is in love. The Simple pleasures enjoyed by all. The scene is very reminiscent of the paintings of Jean-Frédéric Schall from this period and most notably his 'A Peasant Girl Carrying a Basket of Fruit on her Head'. Jean-Frédéric Schall was a French painter who specialized in genre scenes and portraits. In 1772, after receiving his initial training at the "École publique de dessin de Strasbourg", he went to Paris. There, he was able to enroll at the École royale des élèves protégés under the sponsorship of Nicolas Guy Brenet, and entered the studios of Francesco Casanova; completing his studies in 1777. He had several patrons, including Jean-Henri Eberts, Jean-Georges Wille and Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne. In addition to Casanova, he studied with Nicolas-René Jollain (1775) and Nicolas-Bernard Lépicié (1776 and 1779). In 1776, he produced his first major works, in the galant style of Fragonard and Debucourt. In 1778, they were produced as colour engravings by Louis-Marin Bonnet. He rapidly became a favourite painter among the high society of his time. Many of his works are fêtes galantes featuring actors, dancers and powerful men with their mistresses, engaged in frivolous activities. He entered the service of Christian IV, Count Palatine of Zweibrücken, and created works for his "Secret Museum". Many were of a risqué or lascivious nature. Some were turned into engravings by Gabriel Marchand (c. 1755-18?). Among his later patrons from Strasbourg was the piano maker, Sébastien Érard. Despite the variety of his works, and their focus, he described himself as a "history painter". His works have also been compared to those of Watteau. In 1787, he married Marie-Catherine Naudé. During the Directory, due to his association with the Ancien Régime he, his wife and children lived in the staircase of a chapel in the Louvre. Later they lived in the phalanstery at the ruins of the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Once the Revolution had taken a more settled form, he emerged to continue painting, but had to devote himself to more austere, patriotic themes. These included children kissing the feet of Liberty and the heroic actions of William Tell. The Revolution did not, however, change people's tastes, so he returned to his previous themes as soon as possible. This time, he used mythology as a pretext for painting naked women in bucolic scenes. He had major showings at the Salons of 1793, 1798 and 1806. As one might suppose, many of his works were unsigned and, during the 19th century, were variously attributed to Fragonard, Antoine-François Callet and Jean-Baptiste Huet. Some of his early works were signed "Challe", possibly to take advantage of the popularity of Charles-Michel-Ange Challe.

  • View of the Bergsee - Oil on Canvas by Josef Brunner - Mid 19th Century
    By Josef Brunner
    Located in Roma, IT
View of the Bergsee is an original modern artwork realized by the Austrian artist and painter Josef Brunner in the middle of the XIX Century. Original Oil painting on Canvas cm. 72 x 3 x 102 (canvas). A beautiful original XIX Century decorated frame is included (total dimensions: 100 x 5 x 130). Both the work and the canvas are in very good conditions. Beautiful and intense oil painting depicting the Austrian mountain lake Bergsee. The painting is characterized by a particular play between lights and shadows: the light indeed is distributed in an extremely suffused but homogeneous way on the view but it is also able to create that sense of magic that characterized the whole landscape. The color of the lake therefore assumes a transparency and an iridescent blue that tends to the green and reflects the color of the surrounding mountains. The sky appears full of rainy clouds but they still allow the rays of the last sun to shine on. The general vision conveys calm and tranquility thanks also to the refined use of color and the play of lights and shadows, the turquoise and the pale opaque blue of the lake is perfectly emphasized by the various green tones of the trees. The white, gray and light brown rocky mountains embrace the lake and the cloudy sky in shades of blue increases the feeling of tranquility. The landscape is desolate; the only signs of life are the three fishermen on the shore: they are three small figures painted in different poses and illuminated by the light too. The surface of the water reflects in a spectacular way the surrounding landscape, it is similar to the surface of a mirror. The style, fantastic and almost dreamy, is into the full Germanic Romanticism. Mindful of Caspar David Friedrich's memoirs (Greifswald, 1774 - Dresda, 1840), the author certainly took his cue from the style of the German and the Austrian Romanticism; tangible signs of Romantic painting are the choice of the subject, an uncontaminated Nordic landscape, and the almost fairytale atmosphere that we find in the composition. This wonderful Romantic painting was created by the Austrian artist Josef Brunner (Wien, 1826 - Wien, 1893). Joseph Brunner was the son of Joseph...
