Leonard Bramer
Magdalene washing the feet of Christ in the House of Simon - Leonard Bramer

About the Item

Oil on copper. We'd like to thank dr. Guido Jansen for his attribution. On the backside a map of Holland (the painter reused an etching plate) Bramer was known for his genre, religious and history paintings. He is noted for his nocturnal scenes, usage of exotic details, costume and setting. He stayed away from typical Dutch themes such as landscapes, still lifes, portraits and genre pieces and he rarely painted Italianate pastoral scenes popular with the Utrecht Caravaggisti. At the center of the composition we can see Magdalene attending to the feet of Christ. The ambiance within the House of Simon is imbued with a sense of introspection and spiritual depth. The play of light and shadow evokes a contemplative atmosphere, drawing the viewer into the scene's emotional resonance. Bramer's masterful brushstrokes breathe life into this poignant encounter, capturing the essence of a transformative moment steeped in humility and redemption, inviting viewers to reflect on the profound themes of forgiveness, grace, and the power of genuine repentance

Oil on panel Portrait of a child holding peaches, accompanied by a dog. We are grateful to Fred Meijer for confirming the attribution on the basis of high-resolution photographs. The present portrayal of a silk-robed child, attended by a pedigree puppy and holding a sprig of expensive, exotic fruit, exudes the burgeoning wealth of the mid-17th century Dutch Republic, and is characteristic of the accomplished hand of Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp. The sex of the present child is difficult to determine with certainty, as young boys also were attired in dresses at this time, but the silk bonnet...
