Sasja Wagenaar
Viewing the large-scale still-life paintings by Dutch artist Sasja Wagenaar is rewarding on two fronts. From afar, delicate flowers and blossoming branches laid across Chinese ceramics appear completely realistic. Then, as one approaches, playful shadows and ethereal reflections reveal the brushstrokes of the works, transporting viewers to a calm, but otherworldly, place.
Wagenaar was born in 1959 in Noord-Scharwoude, the Netherlands. In 1985, she graduated from the Amsterdam University of the Arts. Her early painting practice included decorating children’s furniture with her sister and fellow artist, Annalinda Wagenaar.
She now works out of a studio in the Spaarnwoude area in South Velsen. Her lush paintings employ traditional subjects for Dutch still lifes — a genre that flourished in the 17th century with paintings by the Old Masters — such as food, flowers and table settings. Yet she imbues the acrylic on canvas works with a contemporary perspective that elevates the quiet beauty of everyday moments. The rich contrasts of color and frequent use of fabric patterns or reflective surfaces as backgrounds further the paintings’ atmospheric tones. Frequently created on monumental scales, the works draw the viewer into their absorbing scenes.
Complementing her visual artistry, Wagenaar is also a member of Wagenaar van Co, a small collective that also includes Dutch artists Annalinda Wagenaar and Jeroen Effernf. She has exhibited her work at art fairs in Europe and around the world, including Affordable Art Fair Amsterdam and Naarden The Art Fair.

- ''Bouquet of Roses'', Contemporary Still Life with Roses in a Orange VaseBy Sasja WagenaarLocated in Utrecht, NLWhen you look at this painting ''Bouquet of Roses'' by Dutch artist Sasja Wagenaar (1959) from a distance you see a perfectly painted image, but up close a generous paint streak is visible. She has a unique way of applying shadow and light effects in her paintings. Sasja Wagenaar is inspired by our classic masters from the seventeenth century, a flourishing period in Dutch painting. The century in which new continents, markets and arts were discovered. At that time in the Netherlands it was a real fad to collect chinoiserie. Originally porcelain, but also Dutch pottery, also known as Delft blue, inspired by Chinese and especially by Japanese bowls and vases. To quote Sasja Wagenaar: ‘Every platter, every bowl is already so much in itself. They were made with great care through hundreds of hands before they ended up here. Their character must be respected in composing the story that forms a still life. They are as alive as the blossom branches and I try to let them speak together. Slowly the image is created’. Although rooted in the 17th century Dutch tradition, her work shows her very own signature and is contemporary. As a true Modern Dutch Master...Category

- ''Crowfoot and Tulip'', Dutch Contemporary Still Life with FlowersBy Sasja WagenaarLocated in Utrecht, NLWhen you look at this painting "Crowfoot and Tulip" by Dutch artist Sasja Wagenaar (1959) from a distance you see a perfectly painted image, but up close a generous paint streak is visible. She has a unique way of applying shadow and light effects in her paintings. Sasja Wagenaar is inspired by our classic masters from the seventeenth century, a flourishing period in Dutch painting. The century in which new continents, markets and arts were discovered. For Sasja, a still life - or, as it is called in the literature: Nature Morte - is not death, but life. She paints life caught in tranquility. The pleasure of the living flowers with their intense beauty. They are not death, but alive, captured and painted at the highlight of their blossom. Although rooted in the 17th century Dutch tradition, her work shows her very own signature and is contemporary. As a true Modern Dutch Master...Category

- "Sprats" Dutch Still-Life Painting of Sprats, FishBy Sasja WagenaarLocated in Utrecht, NLWhen you look at this painting "Sprats" by Dutch artist Sasja Wagenaar (1959) from a distance you see a perfectly painted image, but up close a flowing movement of the paint streaks is visible. Sasja Wagenaar has a unique way of applying shadow and light effects in her paintings. The strong reflection on the dark background is a reference to the camera obscura. This dark room was used since the 16th century by Old Masters (such as Vermeer, as is presumed) to create a detailed reflection of an object. Sasja Wagenaar is inspired by our classic masters from the seventeenth century, a flourishing period in Dutch painting. The century in which new continents, markets and arts were discovered. At that time in the Netherlands it was a real fad to collect chinoiserie.
