The Hand Kisser - Oil on Canvas - 19th Century

19th Century

About the Item

The Hand Kisser is an artwork realized by an unknown Painter of Center Italy. Oil on Canvas, Early 19th Century. Copy of an earlier painting, probably dated late 17th Century. Light and dark accentuated on the faces and the uncovered areas of the bodies, which break up the general two-dimensionality of the painting. Cm. 208 x 208. Good condition, with minor signs of age. A man dressed in period clothing rests his mouth on the hand of an armed man. At the same time he holds a woman's hand behind him. Around other soldiers and, lower right, two children who seem to be offering gifts of gold and jewels. We don't have much news about this canvas, and about who the characters represented are. However, we know that the hand kissing gesture is a timeless act that has very ancient origins. History has told us many of them over the centuries, from the hand kisses in the eighteenth-century courts of Pietro Longhi, passing through the etchings of Manon Lescaut, and the iconic one of John Barrymore to Martha Mansfield. It was born as a gesture of courtesy and chivalry towards ladies around 1500, and then spread to all European courts. It becomes a gesture of reverence and respect also for Kings, princes and obviously Popes. In the canvas in question, we do not know the reason for this kiss, whether it is an act of thanks or simply of respect. Is the man asking for the girl's hand? Or is he perhaps thanking the knight for saving her? We don't know, but it's interesting to imagine why and make a good story out of it, remembering how important this gesture, now almost completely lost, was for men of the past.

  • On the Beach - Oil Paint by Renzo Vespignani - 1955
    By Renzo Vespignani
    Located in Roma, IT
On the Beach is an artwork realized by Renzo Vespignani in 1955. Oil on Canvas, 128x102 cm. It Includes a gilded modern frame. Hand signed and date lower left. Good conditions. Renzo Vespignani was born in Rome on February 19, 1924 to Guido Vespignani and Ester Molinari, great-grandson of Virginio Vespignani, a famous architect. After the death of his father, a surgeon and cardiologist, he had to move very young with his mother to the proletarian area of Portonaccio, adjacent to the San Lorenzo district, where he grew up. He began to paint during the Nazi occupation, hiding with the engraver Lino Bianchi Barriviera, his first teacher. Other important points of reference, which influenced his artistic beginnings, were Alberto Ziveri and Luigi Bartolini while, especially in his first paintings, the influence of expressionists such as George Grosz and Otto Dix seems evident. In 1945 he exhibited his first personal exhibition and began to collaborate with various political-literary magazines (Domenica, Folla, Mercurio, La Fiera Letteraria) with satirical writings, illustrations and drawings. His work, between 1944 and 1948, describes the attempt to resurrect an Italy destroyed by the war. In 1956 he founded, with other intellectuals, the magazine Città Aperta, focused on the problems of urban culture. In 1961 he was among the winners of the Spoleto Prize; an essay was dedicated to the selected artists accompanied by large-format reproductions (black and white and four-color) of the exhibited works. In 1963 a work by him was exhibited at the Contemporary Italian Paintings exhibition, set up in some Australian cities . In 1963-64 he exhibited at the exhibition Peintures italiennes d'aujourd'hui, organized in the Middle East and North Africa. Since 1969, Vespignani has been working on large pictorial cycles dedicated to the crisis of the society of well-being: Imbarco per Citera (1969), concerning the intellectual class involved in '68; Album di Famiglia...

  • Mid-Century Oil on Canvas. Harbour scene. Farewell to the Fishermen.
    Located in Cotignac, FR
Mid 20th century oil on canvas of a crowded harbour scene, showing the local fisherman or sailors saying farewell to their families before going to sea. The painting is signed bottom right but the artist remains as yet unidentified. A colourful yet slightly brooding and dreamlike painting. The figures are faceless and the shapes loose and undefined reminiscent of the works by Balthus who in turn was influenced by LS Lowry and his scenes of industrial districts. The colours are deep and glowing and the shapes of the figures are rounded giving a sense of warmth and evoking the quality of light seen at either dawn or dusk. Balthasar Klossowski de Rola (February 29, 1908 – February 18, 2001), known as Balthus, was a Polish-French modern artist. He is known for his erotically charged images of pubescent girls, but also for the refined, dreamlike quality of his imagery. Lowry is famous for painting scenes of life in the industrial districts of North West England in the mid-20th century. He developed a distinctive style of painting and is best known for his urban landscapes peopled with human figures often referred to as "matchstick men".
