Large Japanese Wood Board Ema Namban Depicting a Portuguese Ship Edo period

About the Item

An Ema is a votive plaque people hang in a "dedication area", at a Shinto shrine, with their wish to the gods. Wishes usually would revolve around health, love, career, prosperity, and academic achievement and safe voyage. This wood board possess substantial historical value because they display scenes of the first European activities in Japan. Some of the most intriguing are ships: the European ships of the Age of Discovery. Such paintings were created by skillful Japanese traditional painters who had the utmost respect for detail, and yet the European ships they depicted are often anachronistic and strangely. I am not able to date this tempera painting precisely and believe this to be late Edo period (late 18th - early 19th century). Very well produced by anonymous painter. Antique tempera painting on wood. Size app.: 60 x 90 cm (roughly 23.6 x 35.4 in). Very good condition, with average usage and age wear. Please study good resolution images for cosmetic condition. In person actual painting may appear darker or brighter than in our pictures, strictly depending on sufficient light in your environment. Weight of app. 1.8 kg is going to measure 5 kg packed for shipment.
