About the Item

Enrique Galwey (1864-1931) - Landscape - Oil canvas Oil measurements 61x74 cm. Frameless. (Barcelona 1864-1931). Spanish painter. He began his training at the San Jorge School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. Later he was a disciple of Joaquín Vayreda in Olot, who encouraged him to travel to Paris. In France he specialized in landscape, initially following the guidelines of the Barbizon school, later ascribing to impressionism. He became known in 1885 at the Exhibition of the Barcelona Watercolor Center, and from then on he alternated the competitions in his hometown with the National Exhibitions held in Madrid, where he obtained a second medal in 1897 for Preludio de la noche and in 1906 for The advanced and first medal in the 1915 edition for his work Dusk in the Pine Forest. At the 1922 Exhibition he occupied a room of honor with fifty-eight oil paintings. Museo del Prado

    Signed lower right. Complemented by a period frame. William L. Lathrop (1859-1938) Deemed “Father of the New Hope Art Colony”, William Langson Lathrop was born in Warren, Illinois. He was largely self-taught, having only studied briefly with William Merritt Chase in 1887, at the Art Students League. Lathrop first moved east in the early 1880s, and took a job at the Photoengraving Company in New York City. While there, he befriended a fellow employee, Henry B. Snell. The two men became lifelong friends and ultimately, both would be considered central figures among the New Hope Art Colony. Lathrop's early years as an artist were ones of continuing struggle. His efforts to break through in the New York art scene seemed futile, so he scraped enough money together to travel to Europe with Henry Snell in1888.
