Description:
Eric Sloane is best known for his illustrations of "americana," and, throughout his life, devoted himself to painting this American world. This painting, titled "Cornwall Bridge," is included in one of his travel books "Return to Taos," which recounted two road trips he took in 1925 and 1960. His prolific work with the natural landscapes of America, one of which can be found in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, has been praised for decades for its picturesque idealism of American life, with a particular focus on rural living, weather patterns, and seasonal changes.
This painting in particular is a typical rendering of a New England covered bridge, a recurring and common motif in Sloane's portfolio. The imminent change in season is present in the composition, although the calm atmosphere is broken slightly by the one-point perspective and the charging truck in the distance.
