"The Awakening" Early Spring Landscape of Mt Hamilton Oil on Masonite Early Spring landscape by Palo Alto, California artist "Florice" Florence P. Wideman (Hoffman) (American, 1893-1989). Several trees are shown at the top of a hill, beginning to show flower buds. The hill overlooks a valley with rows of agriculture and lush forest. The buds on the trees are created with a splatter technique that adds a layer of texture and randomness. In the background is Majestic Mt Hamilton in the clouds. Born in Scranton Pa. she married Stuart V. Hoffman and Engineer and draftsman for the US Navy. Signed "Florice Hoffman" in the lower right corner. (possibly dated '60 below signature) Artist's tag on verso. Presented in a carved, gilded frame with a linen liner. Frame size: 31.25"H x 37.25"W Board size: 22"H x 28"W Biography from "Artists in California, 1786-1940" by Edan Hughes: Florice (Florence) P. Wideman was born in Scranton, PA on Aug. 26, 1893. At age ten Wideman moved with her family to Palo Alto, CA where she attended public schools. Her art studies began at CSFA for five years under Frank Van Sloun followed by one year at ASL in NYC and in Paris. Returning to the U.S., she spent ten years in NYC in fashion designing. Upon returning to California about 1930, she taught art at Palo Alto High School and San Jose Jr. College. Her married name was Hoffman at the time of her demise in Palo Alto on June 1, 1989. Her subjects include still lifes and landscapes of the Santa Clara Valley. Member: SF Women Artists; Palo Alto Art Club; SWA.     Artwork is in very good condition to Excellent with no issues. The frame has some slight loss of gilding in isolated areas (imperfections will be minimized but cannot be restored to new condition). New hanging hardware installed prior to shipping.

Image: 16"H x 30"W Edgar Alwin Payne was an American painter known for his landscapes, seascapes and western paintings. He was born in Washburn, Missouri on March 1, 1882, and began painting at the age of 14. He began his career by designing and painting scenery for the stage, and murals for homes and theaters. Primarily a self taught artist, he did though study briefly at the Art Institute in Chicago. Recognized as one of California's leading landscape artists, Payne earned the respect of his peers and art critics for his Impressionistic landscapes painted in the plein-air style. Possessing a reverence for nature, he especially loved the mountains. Frequently he took pack horses in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range to the upper lakes to sketch and paint, there he glorified the areas majestic peaks and cobalt blue lakes. Payne Lake was named in his memory. Drawn to Europe, Payne trekked to and painted the elevated heights of the Swiss Alps, the colorful fishing boats of Concarneau Harbor and Brittany, France and the picturesque sailing vessels of Chioggia, Venice, Italy.
