Franklin Stanwood
Oil Landscape of Horizon at Sunset

c. 1878

About the Item

Franklin Stanwood was born in Portland Maine and was raised by a captain. He was very self taught as he began his painting journey and practiced many different styles of brushwork. Some very linear, and others very light and fluttery. His work varied, as he held interest in many different subjects. His fame derived from his ability to beautifully portray both rural landscape scenes and ship portraits. His landscape scenes are famous for including houses in the distant horizon, much like in this painting. While in Portland, he founded the Portland Society which helped artists with their craft, and often went on many sketching journeys across the sea and in the near mountains. By this point, Portland had been home to many other famous artists, and he grew in popularity alongside them. This artist later passed at the early age of 36. This painting is a stellar example of his landscape mastery and uses bold and captivating colors to create such a "fiery" sunset. This painting is in excellent condition, comes with frame, and is signed lower left.
