About the Item
French Mid Century oil on canvas painting of Le Pont Neuf bridge in Paris by Georges Dominique Rouault. Signed lower left, presented in fine gilt and painted wood frame with linen slip.
Charming and atmospheric view of this iconic Parisian scene, Le Pont Neuf, the oldest bridge in Paris crossing the river Seine (It has been listed since 1889 as a Monument Historique by the French Ministry of Culture). On the other side of the bridge is the Île de la Cité. The tip of the island seen in the painting is the location of the Square du Vert-Galant, a small public park named in honour of Henry IV, nicknamed the "Green Gallant". The spire of Notre Dame de Paris can be seen in the distance.
Rouault has captured the scene of the Seine river barges waiting for their cargoes, as well as smaller sailing vessels on the other shore, all against the backdrop of the wonderful classical buildings under a typical Parisian sky.
Rouault, a notable French Impressionist specialized in views of Paris. Rouault exhibited widely and with success and is well-listed in all relevant art reference works, including the Benezit. He mainly painted in watercolour on paper so his works of oil on canvas are more rare and sought after.

- "Solebury Valley"By William Langson LathropLocated in Lambertville, NJSigned lower right. Complemented by a period frame. William L. Lathrop (1859-1938) Deemed “Father of the New Hope Art Colony”, William Langson Lathrop was born in Warren, Illinois. He was largely self-taught, having only studied briefly with William Merritt Chase in 1887, at the Art Students League. Lathrop first moved east in the early 1880s, and took a job at the Photoengraving Company in New York City. While there, he befriended a fellow employee, Henry B. Snell. The two men became lifelong friends and ultimately, both would be considered central figures among the New Hope Art Colony. Lathrop's early years as an artist were ones of continuing struggle. His efforts to break through in the New York art scene seemed futile, so he scraped enough money together to travel to Europe with Henry Snell in1888. There he met and married an English girl, Annie Burt. Upon returning to New York, he tried his hand at etching, making tools from old saw blades...Category
