Gerard Curtis Delano
Navajo Camp

About the Item

"Navajo Camp" is an oil on panel painting by Gerard Curtis Delano. The painting is signed lower left "Delano". The framed piece measures 31 x 36 3/4 x 1 7/8 inches. Delano was a painter and illustrator of the American west who painted prolifically for more than 50 years. Delano was born in Marion, Massachusetts. He served in the US Navy in the First World War, then worked on a ranch in Colorado before moving to New York City to study art. He also attended the Grand Central School of Art, taking classes with prominent illustrators Harvey Dunn, Dean Cornwell, and N.C. Wyeth. Early in his career, Delano drew comic illustrations for magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Collier's Weekly and Western Stories. He also painted scenes for calendar companies. In 1943, Delano encountered the Southwest and Navajo for the first time. The Navajo people and their landscapes such as red sandstone canyons and wildlife was Delano's muse and it was through this subject matter that he found his highest expression as an artist. His style explored some Cubist influences periodically as well. Provenance: Private Collection, purchased in Scottsdale, Arizona, June 21, 1985
