Gordon Cope
'Bay Shanties, San Francisco', Marin, WPA, Mid-century California oil, Benezit

1950

About the Item

Oil landscape showing a view of several age-worn buildings near waters edge, with two sailboats making their way past, and gold and lavender hued hills in the background. Signed lower right, "Gordon N. Cope" (American, 1906-1999) and dated 1950. Bearing a gallery label verso with the title "Bay Shantys". Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Gordon Cope became a portrait and landscape painter and teacher. A student with A.B. Wright and La Conte Stewart from 1916 to 1923 in Utah and peers with Lawrence Squires in Arizona from 1923 to 1924, Cope also studied abroad from 1924 to 1928. In Europe, he studied the Old Masters in museums in England, France, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium and Holland. In Cope's last year, he was a student at the Julian Academy in Paris and exhibited at the 1928 Paris Salon. Returning to Utah, Cope painted portraits of notables and became involved in education, starting and heading the art department at Latter Day Saints University until 1931, teaching with the Mountain School of Art and serving as Director at the Art Barn School until the early forties. Working with the WPA as one of the original ten artists, Cope worked in the Utah Public Works of Art Project under the Federal Emergency Relief Administration, focusing on early Native American life as a part of a mural project for the state capitol. After moving to California, Cope became known for his "vigorous impressionistic realism. [Cope's] Sierra Snow Scene, painted when he was seventy-two years old, has a scale, boldness and subtlety usually lost by older artists" (Swanson, 182). Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Initialed lower right, 'K.W.' for Katherine Westphal (American, 1919-2018) and painted circa 1965; additionally bearing label, verso, inscribed with artist's name and titled 'Venice'. Framed Dimensions: 33.25 x 2 x 29 Inches A large, Post-Impressionist oil showing a view of the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute on the Punte della Dogana with half-a-dozen gondolas rocking on the gentle swell of the Guidecca. A vibrant modernist vedute by this well-listed California woman artist who shows the iconic Baroque church as if suspended in golden light, both reflecting the sunset and, itself, reflected in the shimmering waters. Born in Los Angeles, Katherine Westphal first attended Los Angeles City College and, subsequently, the University of California at Berkeley where she studied painting and art history and received both her Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees. In 1943, she was awarded the Phelan Travelling Scholarship which funded her travel to Mexico where she visited the studios of both David Siquieros and Diego Rivera, an experience that confirmed her lifelong preference for Modernist principles in her work. Over the course of a long and multi-faceted career, Westphal exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. In addition to her career as a fine artist, Westphal wrote extensively on art theory and also became a beloved teacher at the University of California, Davis, becoming a tenured faculty member in 1968, a full professor in 1975. She retired in 1979 as Professor Emeritus. Katherine Westphal’s work is held in the permanent collections of prominent American museums including the Smithsonian Museum...
