Jack Wilson
At the Train Station - Industrial Landscape

late 20th Century

About the Item

Bold industrial landscape by Jack Wilson (American, 1919-1988), featuring a steam train pulling into the station. This scene is filled with many details and warm vivid colors, and the horizontal composition conveys the sense of a panoramic view. Signed "JACK WILSON" in the lower right corner. Presented in a wood frame with a linen fillet. Canvas size: 20"H x 40"W Born in Sausalito and educated in San Francisco, Wilson lived for many years in Los Gatos until his death in 1988. Wilson’s style was to paint with knives that he made himself. Besides producing pieces that have hung in different local banks and international consulate offices, Wilson also provided illustrations for a 1968 land use study that was conducted by the Lexington Hill Association and which was about development near the Lexington Reservoir. Selected Galleries and Shows: El Gatito Gallery, Los Gatos; 1968 Castle Art Gallery, Santa Cruz; 1968, 1969 “Art in the Marketplace”, Santa Cruz; 1972 Desert Inn Fashion Plaza Holiday Show, Palm Springs; 1975 Desert Inn Fashion Plaza, Palm Springs; 1978 La Mar Shows of Art, Palm Springs; 1981 the following is from an article: By MICHELE TJIN and LOS GATOS WEEKLY-TIMES MediaNews, Los Gatos Weekly-Times July 31, 2007 Jack Wilson’s name isn’t a well-known moniker in town, but the staff members at the Los Gatos Library hope to change that. They are digitally safeguarding Wilson’s work so that more people are aware of the local artist who captured Los Gatos on canvas. Born in Sausalito and educated in San Francisco, Wilson lived for many years in Los Gatos until his death in 1988. He loved painting maritime life as he observed it along the California coast; frequent subjects were seagulls, fishing boats and beachfronts. But he also found inspiration in town, and over the years his work has appeared in different places in Los Gatos. In 1987, for example, he painted an 1890s railroad depot, which was used as the cover for the GTE telephone book for Los Gatos that year. Hanging in the library is a Wilson painting of a horse carriage in front of a Victorian house. “When I saw the painting, I hadn’t realized that it’s (by Wilson),” said librarian Paul Kopach. “It’s nice, colorful and very realistic.” Kopach and some of Wilson’s friends have embarked on a project to digitize photographs of the artist’s work and put them online with some background information. Kopach said the group has thousands of photographs, and the project is expected to take months to complete. “It seems he might gain greater heights with our publicizing of the paintings over the Internet and showing what a good artist he really was,” Kopach said. “We’re always open to individual collections and to show the world what Los Gatos is all about.” The library acquired the donated collection when Wilson’s friends turned it over to staff members, asking if there was a way of preserving the work. The art was destined for the garbage dump when a caretaker threw out boxes of his work when she was helping Wilson’s widow, Meta, move from Villa Vasona. An astute maintenance worker at Villa Vasona found the boxes and saved them. Marge Faucher, an artist who belonged to the same art guilds that Wilson was a part of, said the work is worth preserving because of his local ties. “He won many awards, and his style is distinctive,” Faucher said. Wilson’s style was to paint with knives that he made himself. As part of the collection handed over to the library, there are old newspaper clippings that promoted his exhibitions, letters from those who appreciated his art and various examples of his work. Besides producing pieces that have hung in different local banks and international consulate offices, Wilson also provided illustrations for a 1968 land use study that was conducted by the Lexington Hill Association and which was about development near the Lexington Reservoir. “He did a variety of things,” Faucher said. Faucher and Joyce Louden, a friend of Wilson’s wife, are moving the preservation project along. They have done an inventory of everything they have found and are matching up photographs of the paintings with their titles. Louden herself was not familiar with Wilson before the boxes were found, but she said his talent is evident, and his name should be saved from obscurity. “I had never heard of Jack Wilson, but he did wonderful things,” she said. “We want to put the work online for the world to appreciate.” From an article: By MICHELE TJIN and LOS GATOS WEEKLY-TIMES MediaNews, Los Gatos Weekly-Times July 31, 2007

Stunning figurative landscape of the Mission San Juan Capistrano by Warren Eliphalet Rollins (American, 1861-1962). Presented in a giltwood frame. "Capistrano" lower right, unsigned. This is a study for a larger painting of the same scene. Image size, 14.5"H x 21"W. For many years Warren Eliphalet Rollins was known as the "Dean of the Santa Fe art colony." He was the first artist to have a formal exhibition there; it was held in 1906 in the old Palace of the Governors. He was a close friend of Carlos Vierra, Gerald Cassidy, Kenneth Chapman, Sheldon Parsons and most of the other famous artists who assembled in the New Mexican capital during the first half of this century. Born in Carson City, Nevada, Rollins was raised in California and attended the San Francisco School of Design where he studied under Virgil Williams. At the completion of his studies, he was awarded the Avery Gold Medal and made Assistant Director of the school. Following his marriage in 1887, he and his wife settled in San Diego, and it was during this period that Rollins became interested in the Indian as subject matter. In search of material, Rollins, his wife, and their two daughters, Ramona and Ruth, traveled through every Western state from the Mexican to the Canadian borders. While in Montana, Rollins painted a portrait of Calamity Jane...
