About the Item
Impressionist/Post impressionist style painting 'Kirkton Bridge, Balquhidder' by Scottish contemporary artist JD Henderson, is a Monet-like image of a Scottish bridge in Balquhidder, the Clan homeland of McLaren in central Scotland. Dated 1995 (verso) and signed by the artist in the lower right corner, the painting is on canvas with oil paint in a new gold frame. JD Henderson is described as a 20th century Scottish Colourist and a landscape artist, using impressionism and post impressionism styles. 'Kirkton Bridge' demonstrates the Colourist trend, but also broader brushstrokes and thick applications of paint from post impressionism that gives the subject matter priority over fleeting naturalistic color and light. The actual bridge and water colors may or may not be the natural color, but it is the use of color and paint strokes that brings the bridge and surrounding landscape to vivid life and perspective. Henderson has been painting since the mid 20th century. His paintings have been exhibited in the Royal Scottish Academy and exhibited in galleries in Glasgow and elsewhere.
The frame, style and size are matched by another JD Henderson work available for sale, 'Sunlit Path'. 'Sunlit Path' is a richly colored garden and pathway in the same technique as 'Kirkton Bridge'. A third painting available for sale, 'Middleton Farm, Comrie' also by JD Henderson, is a landscape of fields and traditional cottage that would go well in a grouping with the other two. All are available at present by the same seller, Saltire Gallerie. Each is available for sale individually, as a pair, or trio, with savings on multiple purchases.
All three richly-colored oil paintings were acquired in Scotland and imported to the US by Saltire Gallerie. 'Kirkton Bridge, Balquihidder' and 'Sunlit Path' had glass coverings when they were acquired. Saltire Gallerie removed these and re-framed with matching gold frames . This impacted the direct representations of color and broad post impressionist brushstrokes, making them more visible and alive. All three paintings are in excellent condition, all painted in the 1990s, two presented in the same sized matching new frames and the third in its likely original compatible frame. No damage or defect has been detected.

- The River in October, Scotland circa 1900By Joseph Morris HendersonLocated in Hillsborough, NC'The River in October' is a lovely impressionist rendering of Scottish autumn color by Joseph Morris Henderson, (1863-1936). Early in his career Henderson exhibited in the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Academy. His work is represented in the Kelvingrove gallery and in galleries and museums in the UK and abroad. Paintings by JM Henderson remain popular and collectible today. Provenance verso shows this painting was a gift to John Stewart, Architect. JM Henderson is Glaswegian, born in Glasgow and died in Glasgow. He grew up in a family of artists. Two brothers and his father Joseph Henderson were all known artists of the period. Henderson studied art in the Glasgow School of Art, and graduated from Glasgow University. Henderson excelled in Scottish landscapes, many in the softer colors of the countryside, rivers, seascapes and lochs. In contrast to the mountainous Highlands he found exceptional beauty in local scenery, farms, waters, and figures in the rural landscape. 'The River, October' is in oil paint on canvas, clearly signed lower right. It is presented in the likely original period gilded frame in good condition. The painting is in very fine condition with no noted faults or past restoration. The colors and brushstrokes are clear and distinct. Collected by Saltire Gallerie, 'The River, October' was imported from Scotland to the USA. It is now ready for your very special place! Henderson was closely connected with the Glasgow Art Club, and was a member of the Committee of Management of the Paisley Art...Category

- "Solebury Valley"By William Langson LathropLocated in Lambertville, NJSigned lower right. Complemented by a period frame. William L. Lathrop (1859-1938) Deemed “Father of the New Hope Art Colony”, William Langson Lathrop was born in Warren, Illinois. He was largely self-taught, having only studied briefly with William Merritt Chase in 1887, at the Art Students League. Lathrop first moved east in the early 1880s, and took a job at the Photoengraving Company in New York City. While there, he befriended a fellow employee, Henry B. Snell. The two men became lifelong friends and ultimately, both would be considered central figures among the New Hope Art Colony. Lathrop's early years as an artist were ones of continuing struggle. His efforts to break through in the New York art scene seemed futile, so he scraped enough money together to travel to Europe with Henry Snell in1888. There he met and married an English girl, Annie Burt. Upon returning to New York, he tried his hand at etching, making tools from old saw blades...Category
