John Syer enjoyed a long and successful painter of English and Welsh landscapes, first exhibiting in London during the reign of William IV and for the last time in the year of his death over half a century later. Between 1832 and his death in 1885, Syer exhibited 19 paintings at the Royal Academy, 68 at the Royal Society of British Artists, 11 at the British Institution, and many more at the New Watercolour Society and the Grosvenor Gallery.
