Signed lower right, 'B. L. Kersey' for Laurie Kersey (American, born 1961), additionally signed, verso, titled, 'Stormy Beach, Pacific Grove Coast, Near Asilomar' and dated 2002. Laurie Kersey’s was raised in an artistic household and grew up raising, training and racing harness horses. After attending the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, she enjoyed a 15 year career as an Art Director and Illustrator on the East Coast. Moving to San Francisco, she continued her studies at the Academy of Art University and later taught both painting and drawing in the Fine Art Department of the Academy. Kersey has exhibited widely and with success and has been the recipient of of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards including from the Oil Painters of America National Juried Exhibition, the American Women Artists National Exhibition and the California Art Club Biennial Exhibition. Her work has been featured in Art of the West, Plein Air, Fine Art Connoisseur and American Artist, among numerous other national publications. Laurie Kersey is a Signature Member of the California Art Club, Oil Painters of America, and American Impressionist Society, and a Master Signature Member of American Women Artists.

    Signed lower right. Complemented by a period frame. William L. Lathrop (1859-1938) Deemed “Father of the New Hope Art Colony”, William Langson Lathrop was born in Warren, Illinois. He was largely self-taught, having only studied briefly with William Merritt Chase in 1887, at the Art Students League. Lathrop first moved east in the early 1880s, and took a job at the Photoengraving Company in New York City. While there, he befriended a fellow employee, Henry B. Snell. The two men became lifelong friends and ultimately, both would be considered central figures among the New Hope Art Colony. Lathrop's early years as an artist were ones of continuing struggle. His efforts to break through in the New York art scene seemed futile, so he scraped enough money together to travel to Europe with Henry Snell in1888.
