Our inherited aesthetic defines beauty in landscape as green and arable land or grand, breathtaking places. I feel the need to expand that definition. I want to portray the desert as it is right now; to dispense with the limitations of what has come before, to quietly point out the beauty of places that are harsh and forbidding to habitation but express an aesthetic of the wild. I strive to go beyond the sentimentality that often defines our images of the West. The scale of many of my pieces (an extreme horizontal) is a compositional strategy to capture the vastness of these places.” – M. Knudsen Mark Knudsen...

"Mixed Marriage" by Maureen O'Hara Ure, mixed media on panel, 16 x 24 inches. Relying on sturdy panel to hold up to months, sometimes years, of revisions, O'Hara Ure slowly builds up an image, obsessively laying down marks in thin, sanded layers of paint, ink, and pencil to create a uniquely smooth, almost polished texture distinctive to her style. When a panel returns to her studio from a show, she may begin to tinker with the image, perhaps first sanding out or painting over just a section. "Often as not, I keep going and start all over, using gesso to erase any memory I have of the painting." Painted with extraordinary detail, this moment in nature is captured in Rick Pas' unique style. I am interested in the surface textures and creating paintings that portray them in realistic detail. Hopefully a viewer will feel they can run a hand over the feathers and moss, or grasp an object in the painting. This detail is usually composed in an abstract design. The design can occur naturally or be arranged by me. The subjects of my paintings are usually based on the patterns and textures of nature and human interaction with nature. I have found subjects to paint in remote wilderness areas of the world, local parking lots, and my own backyard.
