About the Item

Willem van Nieulandt the Younger, the son of Adriaen van Nieulandt the elder, was born to a family of artists from Antwerp. They moved to Amsterdam in 1589, after the Siege of Antwerp, probably because they were Protestants. Adriaen’s sons Willem van Nieulandt II (named after his uncle, also a painter), Adriaen van Nieulandt the Younger, and Jacob van Nieulandt all became painters. According to Arnold Houbraken, the young Willem was a pupil of Roelant Savery in Amsterdam. Shortly afterwards, he travelled to Rome, where he became a student in the workshop of Paulus Bril. He specialized in painting picturesque ruins and monuments, several he subsequently engraved. Around 1603 he returned to Antwerp, but shortly after he resided in Amsterdam, where he became an acknowledged poet as well as a prolific Italianate landscape painter, draftsman and engraver. In Antwerp he was a prominent member of the chamber of rhetoric the Olyftack (Olive Branch). In 1621 he transferred to the rival society called De Violieren. From May 1629 until his death in 1635 he lived again in Amsterdam. A very early source about Willlem van Nieulandt can be found in Karel van Mander’s Schilder-boeck published in 1604. His remarks about the master are placed right after his lengthy account of the Bril brothers: “Also Guilliaem van Nieuwlandt of Antwerp, 22 years old, was his pupil for one year – he presently lives in Amsterdam and has adopted the essential of his master’s style” (Van Mander 1604, fol. 292r.). Van Mander wrote his important book in the course of 1603; thus we might assume that Van Nieulandt arrived in that year or the year before in Amsterdam. In 1602 he was still in Rome in the house of his uncle. It is not always clear whether the Italian word ‘Terranova’ (Italian for Nieulandt), which can be found in contemporary Roman documents, refers to the uncle or the nephew. The present, unpublished, painting is an important addition to the body of work by Van Nieulandt as we know it today. All the stylistic features, handing and colors, firmly place the present work into the oeuvre of Van Nieulandt. A date around 1610 when the master was based in Amsterdam and at the height of his powers as a painter is feasible.
