Marie Louise Bion
Marie Louise Bion (1858-1939) – Portrait of a Young Woman – 19thC Oil Painting

1885

About the Item

Marie Louise Bion (Swiss, *1858 ; † 1939) • Portrait of a young Woman • Oil on canvas • Stretcher ca. 56 x 46 cm • Original 19thC frame ca. 68 x 59 cm • Signed and dated ‘ 7/85 ’ for July, 1885 On offer this accomplished portrait of a beautiful young woman wearing her finery, dating to the time, when Marie-Louise Bion had finished her art studies. Note the ethereal, wispy veil covering the sitter’s hair, her expression, that shiny gold necklace she’s wearing, the finely patterned textiles and more. The composition is very reminiscent of Renaissance depictions of the Cumaean Sibyl. Despite of the presence of craquelure and a slightly wavy/uneven canvas bottom right and top corner - visible when viewed from a flat angle in reflected light from the side (see last photo), the nearly 140-year-old delightful painting presents well and is in clean and stable condition, as is the Victorian gilt frame. Verso on the frame a label numbered '3378', by the Art Dealers A. & M. Weil (formerly trading as Weil-Heilbronner), who sold from the prestigious Bahnhofstrasse 73 address in Zürich, Switzerland. The stretcher seems to have suffered some damage at two corners over the years, but all is stable. The modern steel clamps were put in place, to replace the original wobbly, rusty nails, which traditionally were used to fix the stretcher in the frame and the wedges are newish. Overall, a great antique object by a great female artist for a great price. Please read on to learn about Marie Louise Bion and please note, worldwide shipping for this antique painting is complimentary - There are no additional charges for handling & delivery. Marie-Louise Bion, born May the 18th, 1858 in Schönholzerswilen, was a successful Swiss realist painter who grew up in the city of St. Gallen. She is mainly best known for her portraiture, but also for her miniatures, as well as genre scenes and she painted on porcelain. Marie-Louise Bion was the eldest of the three children of Friedrich Wilhelm Bion (1826–1864) and Maria Bion, née Oettli (1831–1900). The Bion family has lived in the St. Gallen since the early 18th century. Marie-Louise's grandfather Wilhelm Friedrich Bion was a pastor and social reformer, who campaigned for women's suffrage in the church. Her great-uncle Gottlieb Bion was also an artist painter. When her family emigrated to Uruguay in November 1862, Marie-Louise first stayed with her father's sister, Emma Bertha Bissegger-Bion, in Weinfelden and then moved to another aunt, Johanna Elisabetha Rohr-Bion, inin Rheinfelden, where her husband owned a pharmacy. After his death, the aunt moved to Zürich with young Marie-Louise. In 19thC Zürich Marie-Louise Bion began her artistic training and attended the Zurich School of Applied Arts (Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich ) under Albert Freytag from 1882 to 1885. Around 1880, Marie-Louise met her long-time partner and patroness Caroline von Muralt (1851–1918), with whose help she did relatively well financially. From 1885 to 1895 the two women lived in Paris, where Marie-Louise took lessons in the studios of Luc-Olivier Merson, Jules-Joseph Lefevre and Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant. Further study trips took Marie-Louise to Italy, Germany, Belgium and Holland. By the end of the 1890s, Marie-Louise Bion was already a well-known artist who exhibited at the Kunsthaus Zürich almost every year and commanded high prices. In 1890 she moved from Paris back to Switzerland and settled in Zürich. In November 1914 she exhibited for the last time at the Kunsthaus Zürich and from 1916 on she was no longer artistically active. After Caroline von Muralt's death, Marie-Louise continued to live in the Zürich apartment the couple had previously shared up to Caroline ‘s death and Marie-Louise eventually died in the Red Cross Hospital in Zurich on March the 28th, 1939 in Zürich. • Hedwig Mechle – Grossmann (1857 - 1928) Rose Flower Girl , 1920 - Oil Painting
    By Hedwig Mechle-Grossmann
    Located in Meinisberg, CH
Hedwig Mechle - Grossmann (Germann, * 3rd of December 1857, Görlitz - † 1st of October, 1928 Ödenburg) Die Kleine Rosenverkäuferin - The Little Rose Seller • Oil on carse canvas, ca. 100 x 75 cm • Frame, 107 x 81 cm • Signed and dated 1920 upper right This large painting will make everybody stop, look, smile and want to buy a lovely rose from that charming girl. Take your time and have a look at the details … the stopper of the water ceramic bottle, her piece of bread, the torn and frayed clothing and more. Hedwig Mechle-Grossmann is well known and appreciated for her expressive genre scenes depicting children. Born in Görlitz, she worked in Berlin and moved on to Ödenburg, where she died. Important examples of her work are held in the Ödenburg Landesmuseum. A few words on condition: The painting has received slight sympathetic restoration - The partially frayed edges have been professionally relined with a narrow strip of new canvas for strength and then the canvas has been re-stretched on to the original stretcher, with the arms of the stretcher covering most of the newly attached strips of canvas. One of the arms of the stretcher has suffered slight worm damage in the past. That short section has been treated, stabilized and the restorer covered the unsightly area with a strip of the same canvas, which was used to reline the edges. The frame seems to be original (certainly early 20thC) - the corners have been re-glued, small areas have been retouched and minor sections of the molding are missing. New small woodblocks...

  • Garçon avec des Fruit - Boy with Fruit - Oil on Canvas - Naive Painting
    By Nino Giuffrida
    Located in Meinisberg, CH
Nino Giuffrida (Sicilian, 1924, active in France) Un Garçon avec des Fruits • Oil on canvas, ca. 41 x 33 cm • Frame, made by the renowned framer Knöll from Zürich, ca. 54 x 46 cm • Signed top left Worldwide shipping for this object is complimentary - There are no additional charges for handling & delivery. Born in 1924 in Sicily, Nino already attended the artistic high school in Catania at the age of 17, where he befriended fellow painters including Pippo Aleo and Giovanni Calogero. At that time, he painted with passion everything he saw, landscapes, seascapes, still lifes. After a first attempt to come to France with his friend Giovanni in 1948, aborted for lack of a visa. Nino finally arrived at the Gare de Lyon on December 8, 1949 and settled at number 30 rue Gabrielle in Montmartre. Nino began to paint Paris. Like many Montmartre artists of this period, while he painted all day long, he moved about in the evening on the terraces of the cafés of Montmartre and Saint-Germain-des-Prés to transform himself into a portrait painter and randomly sketch the customers in restaurants. Nino then devoted himself more and more to the painting of children, which became his favorite theme of inspiration. Pierre Imbourg, journalist and art critic, wrote of him: "Montmartre, the land of little ‘Poulbots’, inspiring Nino to record in his mind all these childrens faces whose intense facial expression he would endevour to reproduce". It was also at this time that his career as a Montmartre painter influenced by cubism began. With the disappearance of the art galleries in Montmartre, Nino decides to settle on the French Riviera, in Cannes then in Vallauris. From 1952 his personal exhibitions follow one another and Nino becomes an international painter: Rome, Brussels, Chicago, Copenhagen, Helsingborg and Aüs in Sweden, in Geneva, in Kourou in Guyana... In Paris, he manages the Galerie de la Colonne...
