About the Item
This superb stately male portrait oil painting is by noted British Slade School artist Reginald Grenville Eves. Painted circa 1939 the portrait is a fine example of Modern British inter war art and a great example of an early 20th century portraiture. The sitter is a white haired gentleman in a suit, sat in a wooden chair. There is superb brushwork and great detail in his facial features. A lovely portrait.

Condition. Oil on canvas in good condition. Image size 36 inches by 28 inches.
Housed in its original gallery frame 44 inches by 36 inches. Excellent condition.
Reginald Grenville Eves (1876-1941). Eves was a painter of portraits and topographical subjects in oil and watercolour. He was born in London and studied at the Slade School under Legros and Brown 1891–5 and won a Scholarship. Eves painted at Holwick, Yorkshire, 1895–1900, then settled in London as a portrait painter and was encouraged by Sargent. Eves exhibited at the R.A. from 1901 and the Paris Salon, winning medals 1924 and 1926. A.R.A. 1933, R.A. 1939. He painted portraits of many celebrities. Eves had a one-man exhibition at Knoedler's 1935 and was an Official War Artist 1940–1. He died at Middleton-in-Teesdale, Durham, 13 June 1941. There was a memorial exhibition at the R.B.A. Galleries 1947.

It was exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1909 and again in Glasgow Institute in 1913, entitled The Critics. Painted circa 1909, the painting has the muted tones but varied palette of the Scottish School. The focus of the composition is a young boy and girl stood in the foreground, outdoors, examining a painting in progress on an easel. They look as if they are giving it very careful consideration. The artist's bag, brushes and tubes of paint lie on the grass beneath the easel but he is not in view. The painting is of the countryside and path leading to a collection of dwellings beyond, all bathed in sunshine. The earnestness of the young art critics can be seen in their body language and is very sweet. A really lovely exhibited Scottish Impressionist Edwardian oil painting and an excellent example of Riddel's work. Signed lower right. Provenance.
