Salvador De Regil
Portrait of Marian Virginia Schuster - Surrealist Artist

About the Item

Marian Schuster was 19 years old in 1954 and attended City College San Francisco where she studied Art. In the old school, Victorian, San Francisco, moneyed household that she was raised in, studying art and design was a very rebellious act for which she received harsh criticism from her mother. It was that year that Marian met Salvador De Regil. She loved his artistic style, his detail in design, and that he was a handsome Latino. It was the perfect storm. Marian had a plan. She would make a statement of independence against her mother. Posing for this painting was it... With the look on her eyes, bare shoulders and cleavage, adding the "come here" finger gesture .... It was way over the top. For all intents and purposes, it might as well have been a full frontal nude. In a dramatic gesture, Marian gave the painting to her mother as a gift. It was her way of saying in no uncertain terms, "I am a grown woman now and this my life. I will do what I want, and see who I want, whether you like it or not!" Marian’s mother had a fit and their relationship was never as Marian had hoped for. Marian’s mother returned the painting soon after and it’s been wrapped up ever since. ************ Born in Mexico, Salvador de Regil came to America in the 1930s. As his artistic expression developed, he became known for his surreal paintings. In 1940 de Regil completed a gouache portrait of Bob Hope on the set of Ghostbreakers. The painting was based on the film plot and is presently part of the Bob Hope Archives (#187). Salvador de Regil was represented by the famous Julien Levy Gallery in NYC and in 1941 had a solo exhibit. When Julien Levy died in 1981 the gallery archives were donated to the Art Institute of Chicago. During WWII de Regil worked in Texas painting glass eyes for blinded soldiers. After the war he settled in the Bay Area where he painted and taught. De Regil designed the popular restaurant and watering hole Tiburon Tommies which was a favorite of all the artists of the area. De Regil was also associated with The Art League of California (no longer in existence), and at least one catalog has his photo. He participated in their professional continuing education series. There are also records of de Regil in the Museum of Modern Art Department of Painting and Sculpture. Salvador de Regil moved to Laguna Beach in the early 1960s. In 1968 he died and was buried in Lake Forest, California. He was married twice and has one daughter. Information provided by Wendy Weigman.

  • Manayunk, Schuylkill River, Factory, City Scene Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 1970
    By Giovanni Martino
Located in Rancho Santa Fe, CA
Provenance: Private Collection, San Diego, CA. Framed Giovanni Martino, National Academy of Design* member, was born on May 1, 1908 in Philadelphia PA where all seven brothers and one sister, Filomina, Frank, Antonio, Albert, Ernest, Giovanni, Edmond, and William became painters. They were under the tutelage of their eldest brother, Frank, who in the late 1920s, founded the first commercial art* studio, Martino Studios, at 27 South 18th Street. Besides studying with his two eldest brothers, Giovanni also studied with Albert Jean Adolph at La France Institute, The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts*, The Graphic Sketch Club, and Spring Garden Institute in Philadelphia. In his mid teens he accompanied his two eldest brothers to New Hope searching for subjects to paint. In the 1930s, he also started to paint in Manayunk, a hilly mill town along the Schuylkill River. At this time he signed his paintings M. Giovanni. These colorful impressionistic* works proceeded more thinly painted dramatically poetic street scenes of the mill town. These images developed into impasto* laden oils in the 1960's with some of the paintings worked with a palette knife*. In Manayunk, he was a common sight on the streets and sidewalks, painting on-the-spot with his wife, Eva Marinelli and his two daughters, Nina & Babette. In the 1980's and 90's he also painted in Conshohocken and Norristown with his youngest daughter, Babette. His paintings became more sharply executed like his earlier work but were more colorful. In the late '90's he worked in his studio to enlarge paintings. He is the recipient of over 100 awards and honors. He received the Benjamin Altman Prize in Landscape Painting in 1975 at the National Academy of Design, NYC where he was elected an Academician (NA) in 1944. He mentored not only his wife and two daughters but also taught at Lehigh University and the Graphic Sketch Club, Philadelphia. He died at his home in Blue Bell on February 1, 1997. • Modern Surrealist Winter Painting by Richard Ericson
    By Richard Ericson
    Located in Larchmont, NY
Richard Joseph Ericson (American, 1922-2010) Untitled, 1962 Oil on canvas 18 x 16 in. Framed: 20 x 18 in. Signed lower left: RJE '62 Richard Joseph Ericson (b. October 22, 1922-d. November 21, 2010), born in Chicago, Illinois. Son of Claire (b. 1899) and Arthur Ericson (b. 1899). His father was an accountant for a food products company and the family moved to Mount Vernon, Westchester County, New York, when he was a young child. Ericson, a twin, first began to draw at age five and took up painting in oils at age twelve. He studied at the Art Students League in New York City in 1941, where he received an honorable mention during the annual scholarship competition held that year. During this period he worked as a commercial artist. After America's entry in World War II Ericson enlisted in the Army in 1942, where he served as a warrant officer. He saw service in North Africa, France, and Germany. While overseas, he did many drawings of the places in which he was stationed. He eventually found himself guarding Italian prisoners of war who had been captured in Sicily and southern Italy. While performing his duties during 1943 and 1944 he found time to paint several important, large scale portraits of the prisoners who were happy to pose for him. As the war concluded he was able to visit Holland to study. After nearly three years overseas, Ericson returned to America and traveled back to his home town of Chicago where he furthered his studies at the Art Institute of Chicago. He married in 1948 and moved his young family to Mexico, where he attended Mexico City College. He studied art and exhibited while living there, receiving his Master of Arts degree, cum laude, in 1953. For a time after his return to the United States he taught art in Dutchess County, New York, where he and his wife built their own house by hand. Eventually the family, which would come to include seven sons, settled in Hicksville, Long Island, New York. Ericson joined the staff of Hicksville High School as the art teacher in 1962, a position he would hold until his retirement in 1983. As a teacher, Ericson was open to all fields and styles of art, constantly experimenting and experiencing new forms and styles. He had started printmaking in the late 1940's and continued to work in this medium for many years, producing mezzotints, etchings, and wood block prints. He also continued to paint, creating portraits, scenes in southern Dutchess County, and Long Island landscapes - for which he would become well known. Ericson grew to love the area in which he lived, and depicted it quite often in his paintings. He became enamored with the historic village of Cold Spring...
