Steve Balkin
Abstract Painting on Canvas by Steve Balkin 'VENUS de FLORIDE'

2007

About the Item

Steve Balkin (1938-2023) This painting was purchased from Balkin's estate. It came from his home in upstate NY. It is titled "Venus de Floride", dated 8/2007 and signed both on the front and en verso. This painting appears to depict the palms of Florida in Vibrant acrylics on a darker background creating the abstract expressionist style that Balkin is known for. Steve Balkin is an American painter well known for being a bit of a 'polyglot of the arts'. A photographer, graphic designer, abstract painter, former actor and merchant marine Younger Balkin was a working model who ran with the early Warhol crowd and worked at The Factory with Andy. Balkin is also very well known for his photography. Steve Balkin is also known for being the proprietor of the Upper East Side’s Burlington Antique Toy Shop until 2011 Steve Balkin is also one of 13 Warhol talents to be featured in "13 MOST BEAUTIFUL". Created Forty-five years after Andy Warhol’s seminal SCREEN TESTS, New York artist Conrad Ventur gathered together thirteen beautiful people from the Factory demimonde to recreate their earlier portraits. The new films follow Warhol’s minimalist design both in terms of framing and duration (a three minute shot projected back at a slightly slower speed), though the sense of “passing time” now registers in terms of decades rather than minutes.

*UK BUYERS WILL PAY AN ADDITIONAL 5% IMPORT DUTY ON TOP OF THE ABOVE PRICE Phenomena High Born by Paul Jenkins (1923-2012) Acrylic on canvas 91.44 x 50.8 cm (36 x 20 inches) Signed lower left Jenkins Signed, dated and titled on the reverse Executed in 1964 which makes this a very early work and so more valuable Biography Born at Kansas City in Missouri (USA), the multi-media artist, poet and playwright Paul Jenkins studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and the Art Students League in New York City. After his discharge from military service at the end of February 1946, he briefly studied playwriting with dramatist George McCalmon at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. Thereafter, Jenkins spent four years studying with Japanese American artist Yasuo Kuniyoshi in New York City. His first solo exhibitions were held at Studio Paul Facchetti in Paris in 1954 and the Martha Graham Gallery in New York City in 1956. Over the past thirty years, numerous retrospectives have been curated across the globe and Jenkins’ work can found in national collections from Europe and the United States to Israel, Australia and Japan. The diversity of his work springs from Jenkins’ wealth of eclectic influences. Some of his earliest works included what he called "interior landscapes" influenced by ancient natural forms like the caves he visited in the Ozark Mountains in his native-Missouri. Frequent student visits to the Frick Collection in New York fostered a love of the great masters: Bellini, Holbein, Vermeer, Rembrandt, de la Tour, Turner and Goya. In compliment, lingering student visits to the renowned Eastern collection of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City evoked powerful sympathy for a monumental Chinese fresco...

"Landscapes of the Soul and of the Mind XIV " is a 40 x 40 inches, original, abstract landscape by American master colorist painter Al Lachman. The artwork is a gallery wrapped canvas, signed "Lachman" in the lower left. It is part of the artist's series "Landscapes of the Soul and of the Mind". The artist puts his thumb upon the pulse of life and records it. In that mystical beat lies the unknown, and he would but make it known. Being both, innovator and spectator, he exists as an intrinsic part of that rhythm. Each painting begins with a premise, and I rarely use the same one twice. It is based on what I see and what I am feeling at that moment. I do not think that painting is about technique. It is about a particular perception of the world around us. The premise creates the periphery of my intent. It is a limitation that gives birth to the creative forces within. - Al Lachman Born in 1936 in the Bronx, NY, Alan Lachman...
