Dale Payson
Dale Payson’s still lifes are larger than life—she paints fruit and flowers larger than they are in real life. By subtly flattening perspective, Payson brings the background forward to create a powerful statement. Payson’s use of color is unbridled, bold and refreshing. Payson studied extensively at the School of Visual Arts in New York and eventually taught at this prestigious institution. Before painting became her sole ambition, Payson was a freelance book illustrator and has more than 25 books to her credit. Payson also studied under Robert Kulick, one of the most innovative and influential picture frame designers in the United States. Payson was most impressed with his small still lifes that would showcase his frames and were displayed regularly- a single pear, flowers, dollar bills. Payson continues to consider him as one of her greatest influences. After a 16 year stint of living in Manhattan, Payson moved to Columbia County and eventually had a small studio built across from her house. Without the cacophony of city life to distract her, Payson plunged into painting the beauty that surrounded her country home. Flowers, fruits, cows and houses became her new comforts, as well as the subjects of her paintings. Having experimented with watercolors, pastel and even hooking rugs, Payson eventually settled on the palette knife as her preferred tool and oil as her chosen medium. Payson manipulates the knife, creating texture and layering that allow her vibrant, yet whimsical colors to dance on linen. 20 years ago, you would have discovered an entirely different body of work by Payson at Frank Peseckis’ Five Points Gallery located in Old Chatham, NY. In those days, Payson explored trompe l’oeil as her genre; a technique focusing on a kind of realism so lifelike that an optical illusion becomes part of the viewer’s experience. One subject she returned to was the frame of a larder, well stocked with freshly hunted game. When fruit and flowers entered her sphere of influence, Payson continued to pursue exactness with the palette knife – bold colors and realistic images dominated the space. Recently, however, Payson’s work has taken on a more ethereal quality. Flowers and pears live in the environment and become the subject of their gravity. Payson claims that a recent abstract painting workshop with Jenny Nelson, who also exhibits with Carrie Haddad Gallery, has expanded her interest in this kind of personal expression. While Payson continues to paint from still lifes, it appears that now she is more able to interpret it. Payson has won numerous awards from many shows and exhibitions, among them the Greenwich Art Society and the renowned Salmagundi Club in New York. Payson’s work hangs in many corporate and museum collections including Nabisco Foods, Dunkin Donuts and the University of Minnesota’s Kerlan Collection.

- Summer Day Lilies (Contemporary Still Life of Vibrant Lilies, Oil on canvas)By Dan RupeLocated in Hudson, NYSummer Day Lilies (Contemporary Still Life of Vibrant Lilies, Oil on canvas) by Dan Rupe 22 x 22 inches oil on canvas Signed on reverse Artist Dan Rupe paints only from life, his composition ruled by his intuitive sense of formal order. He begins covering his canvas with a deep crimson wash. This ground gives his brilliant pure color , applied with an expressive, direct gesture, an electric charge. No matter how often or how long one looks at a Rupe painting, it is always the present tense. The tone of his palette, the freshness and clarity of primary colors, reflects an optimistic attitude, an intrinsic love of life. In this work, three vibrant pale nude colored lilies open their blooms amidst bright green grasses. Rupe succeeds at capturing the immediacy of his subjects be it flowers, buildings or people. Read below for an amusing profile written about the artist in 2003: You‘ve likely seen him on the streets of Hudson, seated before his canvas in a multi-colored paint daubed t-shirt and shorts, his straw hat providing shade for all but his tanned forearms and knees. His splattered Technicolor Walkman tape player...Category

- Lotus No. 8 (Realist Still Life Painting of Green lotus leaves and flower buds)By Frank DePietroLocated in Hudson, NY20 x 16 x 1.5 inches oil on canvas Painted with the exactness of a still life photograph, this hard edge realist painting by artist Frank DiPetiro of Lotus leaves and buds about to bloom glows with green luminescence against a pale gray background. Inspired by close observations of the natural world and encounters with still moments that give us pause. Lines, shapes and colors encountered in nature, reveal the cycles of decay and regeneration that are life’s constant state of change. The work has a quiet, meditative quality. The subject is portrayed in a manner true to their existence in a specific time and place and selected based on considerations of visual relationships to formal elements of painting. Aspects of photo realism, hard edge and color field techniques are uti-lized to isolate the uniqueness of the subject’s detail, as well as emphasize flatness and illusion of depth within the two-dimensional space of the painting. About the artist: Frank DiPietro was born and raised in Scranton PA. He received a Bachelor of Art from Bloomsburg University in 1997, majoring in both Painting and Ceramics with a minor in Art History. In 2000 he earned a degree in Art Education from Moore College of Art and Design while continuing his studies in painting. Frank lived in Philadelphia for twelve years painting and teaching at several museums, art centers and schools in the region.
