About the Item
Nancy Ellen Craig was born in New York City and graduated from Bennington College and the Art Students League in New York before beginning her career in portraiture. Throughout her career, Nancy Ellen Craig's critics have compared her work with that of Thomas Eakins and John Singer Sargent, among others.
Craig was a painter’s painter, as proven by the near-photorealism of this tenderly rendered shell. Craig’s work, especially in portraiture, strayed not too far from the American impressionism of Sargent, while also maintaining the influence of neoclassicism and realism. This unique painting breaks from those traditions in some key ways: The absence of a defined background breaks with American impressionism; and the lack of any perspective signifiers divides the painting from the neoclassical tradition.

Stephanie Peek's "Uniform Language" is a constellation of small painting on alabaster-coated wood panels featuring camouflage patterns of nations worldwide.
