About the Item
Oil on panel, signed and dated 2000. Unframed size: 15.7 inches high x 23.6 inches wide x 0.25 inches deep. Sold unframed. Reverse side with older, faded Eyckmans' painting and artist's label.
Created in 2000, and much inspired by the Old Masters, this painting combines many “vanitas” symbols—reminders that change and death are inevitable. The skull, aging books, extinguished candle, fallen cup, and stopped watch are beautifully composed in close-up, utilizing a minimum of negative space. One can see the fuzzy and unrecognizable reflection of the painter, quite rare for him, in the silver incense holder. Note the complex composition, the strong use of chiaroscuro, and the masterful depiction of the human skull, the threads of the unravelling books, and the smoke of the candle. Please note that the last photo is of the reverse side of the painting, indicating that the panel was reused. Unlike Stefaan’s other works, this painting is sold unframed.
This painting is available for viewing at The Elemental Garden in Woodbury, CT and may be shipped on approval with prior, fully-refundable payment and non-refundable shipping costs. Must be returned in original condition and original packing materials. In the U.S., the artist is represented exclusively by The Elemental Garden, LLC.
Stefaan Eyckmans was born in Niel, Belgium, a brickyard village in the shadow of Antwerp. The son of Louis Eyckmans, a painter and commercial artist, Stefaan was introduced to the tools of drawing and painting at an early age.
During his student days, Stefaan was strongly influenced by the Flemish Primitives, the great 17th century still life painters, and the Antwerp hyperrealist movement, led by Willem Dolphyn. Later, Stefaan's work shows the impact of Henk Helmantel's impasto technique and the austere compositions of Giorgio Morandi.
After completing his education as a graphic designer and illustrator, Stefaan worked for a time in advertising, simultaneously concentrating more and more on his painting. He soon discovered that he was forever drawn to the silent world of the studio where patient observation and exacting style allowed him to slowly build his timeless compositions…paintings that serve as an antidote to our stressful computer-dominated lifestyles.
After years of experimenting with numerous media and materials, Stefaan developed a tonal technique employed by the Old Masters that incorporates common everyday objects with modern materials and colors, resulting in Contemporary Realism with its roots in 17th and 18th century traditional painting.
The simple objects in Stefaan's paintings are transformed by his masterful technique to show us their unexpected beauty. Essential to this effect is the interaction of light and dark, multi-layering, and glazing. The result is a powerful and beautiful whole, strong and alive, that initially attracts the viewer from a distance through color, composition, and lighting, but which is fully revealed only upon examination of each painting's intimate details.
Stefaan has exhibited at numerous prestigious international venues and his paintings are on permanent display at galleries in the US, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Stefaan's patrons include collectors around the world, from museum CEOs to captains of industry to designers to art-lovers everywhere, each of whom finds unrivaled beauty and peace in his paintings.

With its mostly white tones and intricate, textured background, this work is nearly a complete departure from the artist’s other paintings. Although it is executed in a powerful chiaroscuro from a classical point of view, the counterpoint of contemporary objects with the vibrant colors make this painting distinctly modern. - NestLocated in Woodbury, CTOil on canvas, signed and dated 2019. French matte black wooden frame over red bolus. Unframed size: 28.7 inches high x 36.2 inches wide. Framed size: 38.2 inches high x 45.6 inches wide x 1.75 inches deep. Sold framed. Stefaan enjoys all naturalia, but particularly bird’s nests, as he often finds abandoned ones on his rural property. Each one is special, but all nests adhere to a mathematical sequence, the Golden Ratio, to build a spiraling structure from the inside out. This bird’s nest with quail eggs and jay feather was painted exclusively as the signature work for the artist’s inaugural U.S. Solo Exhibition. The detailing of the nest laced with moss demonstrates the intricate balance between the bold, confident brushstrokes to define the subjects, and the restraint required to keep the composition light, loose, and airy. This large, lifelike work is the centerpiece of a film commissioned by The Elemental Garden...Category

- Thy Name is WomanLocated in Woodbury, CTOil on canvas, signed and dated 2018. French handmade Delf wooden frame, dark bronze patina with gold leaf. Unframed size: 19.7 inches high x 24.02 inches wide. Framed size: 28 inches high x 32.3 inches wide x 1.25 inches deep. Sold framed. Stefaan was gifted this skull by a friend, whose carpenter father found many years ago in a false ceiling. The skull sat in his workshop and was eventually named “Gilda”. The composition is unusual in its stark simplicity that speaks to the inevitable death we all face. Fascinating without being morbid, the arrangement is simple yet bold. Note the extraordinary brushwork detailed in the shroud, as well as the intricacies of the skull. The slash of cobalt blue in the background provides an ethereal quality. The title is adapted from Shakespeare’s Hamlet and is the artist’s inside joke on the character “Guildenstern” vs “Gilda”. Part of the title can be seen in the lower right quadrant of the painting. Compared to “Vanitas”, painted in 2000, the artist’s evolution in form and execution is most evident in this 2018 work. This painting is available for viewing at The Elemental Garden...Category
