About the Item
Mid Century Expressionist oil on canvas tablescape of flowers and Champagne.
This wonderfully energetic painting straddles the line between impressionism and expressionism. The forms of the subject ( flowers and Champagne ) are visible but only just through an explosion of thickly applied energetic brushstrokes quickly worked to express the joy of the celebration within.
This painting packs a punch and the more you look the more you see. A great work for celebrating a special event.
Expressionism is considered more as an international tendency than a coherent art movement, which was particularly influential at the beginning of the twentieth century. It spanned various fields: art, literature, music, theatre and architecture. Expressionist artists sought to express emotional experience, rather than physical reality. Famous Expressionist paintings are Edvard Munch’s The Scream, Wassily Kandinsky’s Der Blaue Reiter, and Egon Schiele’s Sitting Woman with Legs Drawn Up.
