About the Item
It was almost 3am and we were still waiting for the band to start to play. I stood on the open air stage buffeted by the winds as the group and their roadies struggled to set up. The crowd had been waiting for hours but nobody seemed to mind. Even the toddlers scooting between legs seemed unconcerned by the late hour. In the midst of the chaos, drawing on his puro, this gentleman seemed at ease with the world. Content beyond measure. I wonder now, as then, what he knew that the rest of us did not.
The Spirit of the Revolution series documents the generation of Cubans that saw the dramatic changes of 1959 as young adults. They have a strength of character and underlying humour that transcends the struggle that has defined their lives.
James Sparshatt went to Cuba in 1999 and was so taken with the island and its people that he returned 15 times in the following 7 years. His images are largely of the music and dance and innate rhythm of the island but he also found himself drawn to an older generation that had been old enough to understand the revolution in 1959, that lived through 40 years of tumultuous and often difficult times and who now watch with some bemusement the return of the outside world in wave upon wave of tourists.
James Sparshatt’s photographs of the “Revolutionary” generation of Cubans capture their grit and indomitable spirit.
The work is printed directly on to a sheet of brushed aluminium. The metal gives the work a gritty strength, a resilience that reflects the strength of the photographic subjects. The piece is light and has a high level of innate UV and humidity protection such that it is hangable in bright and damp environments.
The portraits are also available as more traditional silver gelatin prints on paper or as high end delectable palladium platinum prints.

James has had solo exhibitions in the US, Ireland, Spain, Cuba, France and across the UK. His work has also been shown at prestigious contemporary art fairs including Pulse - Miami, Art Chicago, Art Hamptons, Slick Paris, Art Market (San Francisco) among others. James’s photographs have been used for many advertising campaigns and have featured in magazines such as Dazed and Confused, Tatler, Red, Wanderlust as well as all of the UK’s major broadsheets. He has also written for the New Statesman. “My love of photography developed while I was working as a photojournalist in Latin America in the 1990s. Both there, and later in Cuba, I was captivated by the energy and exuberance of the festivals and dance so inherent in Latino life. Many of my images celebrate the rich and vibrant musical heritage of Havana, Buenos Aires and Seville. When I look at them I recall the rhythmic beat of the music and almost feel a trickle of sweat running down my back.” His exhibition at the Royal National Theatre, London was described in the Sunday Telegraph as “a dazzling collection of black and white images”. James has been a finalist in the Sony World Photographic awards, the Centre for Fine Art Photography and The Worldwide Photography Gala awards. He has also won the Center for Fine Art Photography’s International award. James frequently gives talks about his work at photographic festivals and exhibitions.

- Terry O'Neill - Marianne Faithfull, Photography 1964, Printed AfterBy Terry O'NeillLocated in Greenwich, CTMarianne Evelyn Gabriel Faithfull is an English singer, songwriter and actress. She achieved popularity in the 1960s with the release of her hit single "As Tears Go By" and became one of the lead female artists during the British Invasion in the United States. Singer Marianne Faithfull posing in just a basque, stockings and suspenders on her first shoot to launch her pop career, London 1964, taken the year she was discovered at a Rolling Stones record release party by manager Andrew Loog Oldham. At the time of the photo-shoot, Faithfull had just released her first single As Tears Go By written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Faithfull is most notorious for leaving her husband to be with lead rock singer Mick Jagger; together they were one of the top power couples of the 1960s. She was one of the greatest fashion icons of the 60s and best remembered for her relationship with the Rolling Stones than for her solo music career. Speaking of the 1964 shoot, O’Neill said: 'I wanted to make her look more sophisticated and glamorous. 'This shoot really took her out of her comfort zone, but I think anyone would agree she looks fantastic.' Terry O’Neill is one of the world’s most collected photographers with work hanging in national art galleries and private collections worldwide. From presidents to pop stars he has photographed the frontline of fame for over six decades. O’Neill began his career at the birth of the 1960s. While other photographers concentrated on earthquakes, wars and politics, O’Neill realized that youth culture was a breaking news story on a global scale and began chronicling the emerging faces of film, fashion and music who would go on to define the Swinging Sixties. By 1965 he was being commissioned by the biggest magazines and newspapers in the world. No other living photographer has embraced the span of fame, capturing the icons of our age from Winston Churchill to Nelson Mandela, from Frank Sinatra and Elvis to Amy Winehouse, from Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot to Nicole Kidman, as well as every James Bond from Sean Connery to Daniel Craig and many other of your favorite celerities, models and famous political figures, royalty and fashion iconic names in fashion.
