About the Item

Limited Edition of 10 more sizes on request This encounter happened in the very early dawn. This mighty and splendid lion male was sitting in the grass and waited for his pack to come back from hunting. Less than 16,000 of those incredible hunters now exist in Africa. A disastrous fall of over 90% in the last 100 years. For years, Joachim Schmeisser has been photographing the last giants of Africa at close range, creating exceptionally intimate portraits of species threatened with extinction. In his new series – The Last Of Their Kind – he focuses on the beauty of creation and its fragile transience. These striking images are timeless works that can be interpreted on different levels: as depictions of a distant past or as iconic memories in a not too distant future in which we can only admire these majestic creatures in zoos. They are both an homage and a final warning - visual revelations that sharpen our clouded view of nature in all its infinite complexity as well as recognizing what treasures we might irretrievably lose. In 2012, Joachim Schmeisser was awarded with the prestigious Hasselblad Master award for his series on African Wildlife. He is considered one of the most outstanding and multi-faceted Fine Art Photographers in the world. He is best known for his exceptionally intimate and touching portraits of the most endangered species in Africa. In 2017 his book »Elephants in Heaven« was launched by the German Publisher teNeues and sold out within 4 months. Particular noteworthy are his large-sized unique prints. By using a large format Sinar camera and medium format cameras he creates prints even in a format of three to 4 meters or more as a unique piece edition. – Photography, Animal, Africa, Wildlife, Nature, Large Format, Lion, King, Portrait, Close-Up, iconic, black and white photography

  • Shirokuro XXVII (Black and White Abstract Photo of Lilypads on Water)
    By Lependorf and Shire
    Located in Hudson, NY
limited edition archival pigment print, edition of 10 26 x 39 inches unframed About the work: This image of highly contrasted water lilies floating on a still water's surface is one is a series completed by the artist duo in 2008 called "Shirokuro", meaning Light and Dark. "The foundation for our work is the photographic image with the optimal quality of light. Selecting the interplay of composition, form, rhythm, and line is the focus for our imagery. Integrating these elements in the computer is the next stage in the process of merging our visual and intuitive sensibilities toward a completed vision. Different perceptual effects arise from recording the world in photographs as opposed to interpreting it in paint: Our goal is not to emulate painting. Conceptual work in all mediums has blurred the line between photographers who make art and artists who use photography." The digital medium has established itself in the natural continuum of art history and the ongoing relationship of art with technology. This work forces us to consider a more serene world while reminding us that no contemporary experience is unmediated; technology touches everything. The use of the computer as a tool does not create; it assists creativity resulting in a synthesis of disciplines to be realized as a limited edition. The combination of archival pigment inks on Crane Fine Art paper framed with archival mattes and backboards insures permanence in excess of 175 years. The creative process will always remain in the mind and the soul of the artist. About the artists: Stan Shire is Professor Emeritus and former chair...
