Mudbath IV, elephant, animal, wildlife, black and white photography, africa

2013

About the Item

Edition of 10 more sizes on request A group of young orphaned baby elephants of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust enjoying their daily mudbath in Tsavo East National Park, Kenya 2013. The elephants need this treatment every day to get rid of the many ticks and other parasites. The mud protect them of the glazing sun. Born in Germany in 1958, Joachim Schmeisser is best known for his major photographic series he has done in East Africa – his iconic portraiture of Elephants. He started this project in 2009 and in 2012, Joachim Schmeisser won the prestigious Hasselblad Award for this work. In 2017 his book »Elephants in Heaven« was launched by the German Publisher TeNeues and sold out within 4 months. » I feel like this work—for me—is an unprecedented example of the perfect balance between creating an icon, and working with an icon.« writes Art Editor Fridey Mickel of the TAZ Berlin about his work. Matthias Harder, Chief curator of the Helmut Newton Foundation Berlin speaks in his foreword about him as a man of conviction with an ecological, visual approach: »Schmeisser’s insightful images call us to action, to get involved in nature and species conservation so that the last stretches of wilderness that remain in our world will continue to exist for a long time to come—especially this incomparable, African ecosystem with its veritable mythical giants of nature. Many photographers have had and continue to have enormous empathy for their fellow human beings, as can be seen in their portraits and street photos. But here we are dealing with a man who has a special place in his heart for animals, for maltreated creatures, and the need to protect them—his photo series simultaneously pays homage to the beauty of nature. Like in street photography, Joachim Schmeisser has to react spontaneously to the situations that unfold in front of his camera. It is not possible to stage this kind of animal photography. We can therefore note the enormous authenticity in Schmeisser’s elephant photos that has, plain and simple, been lost in many other areas of photography.« – Photography, Animal, Africa, Wildlife, Nature, Large Format, Tusks, Elephant, Portrait, Close-Up, iconic, black and white photography

  • Shirokuro XXVII (Black and White Abstract Photo of Lilypads on Water)
    By Lependorf and Shire
    Located in Hudson, NY
limited edition archival pigment print, edition of 10 26 x 39 inches unframed About the work: This image of highly contrasted water lilies floating on a still water's surface is one is a series completed by the artist duo in 2008 called "Shirokuro", meaning Light and Dark. "The foundation for our work is the photographic image with the optimal quality of light. Selecting the interplay of composition, form, rhythm, and line is the focus for our imagery. Integrating these elements in the computer is the next stage in the process of merging our visual and intuitive sensibilities toward a completed vision. Different perceptual effects arise from recording the world in photographs as opposed to interpreting it in paint: Our goal is not to emulate painting. Conceptual work in all mediums has blurred the line between photographers who make art and artists who use photography." The digital medium has established itself in the natural continuum of art history and the ongoing relationship of art with technology. This work forces us to consider a more serene world while reminding us that no contemporary experience is unmediated; technology touches everything. The use of the computer as a tool does not create; it assists creativity resulting in a synthesis of disciplines to be realized as a limited edition. The combination of archival pigment inks on Crane Fine Art paper framed with archival mattes and backboards insures permanence in excess of 175 years. The creative process will always remain in the mind and the soul of the artist. About the artists: Stan Shire is Professor Emeritus and former chair...
