About the Item
Samoylova's "Landscape Sublime" series explores how landscape imagery in contemporary culture is used to create constructed realities, wholly apart from our lived experiences. Samoylova collects online stock photography, and creates a group of landscape images that reflect the stream of consciousness nature of internet surfing, and the idealized imagery of consumer culture. The digital images are printed, cut, folded, and assembled into three-dimensional studio tableaux which she then re-photographs. The resulting works collage together unreal and romanticized spaces, evoking the way that commercial images reflect popular taste like an infinite hall of mirrors.

Anastasia Samoylova
Anastasia Samoylova is rapidly becoming one of the most impactful photographic voices of her generation. Her "FloodZone" series depicted the impact of rising sea levels, and has been exhibited widely. Her current series "IMAGE CITIES" explores how large-scale photographic imagery has increasingly surpassed architecture as the defining feature of city spaces. In her earlier "Breakfast with . . ." series, she playfully pays tribute to iconic photographers who "join her" for the first meal of the day. Samoylova was born in Moscow in 1984, where she earned a Master’s degree in Environmental Design from Russian State University for the Humanities in 2007. She moved to the US in 2008 and received an MFA from Bradley University in 2011. She now lives and works in Miami and in New York City. Her photography has been featured in solo exhibitions at museums and galleries around the world, including the Chrysler Museum in Virginia and the Eastman Museum in Rochester, in 2022; the HistoryMiami Museum and the Multimedia Art Museum Moscow in 2021; and in 2020, at the Contemporary Art Museum in Tampa and the Print Center in Philadelphia, Her work is also included in a growing number of public and private collections. In 2021, she was granted the first-ever KBr Photo Award for "IMAGE CITIES," a project that is ongoing and will encompass a number of European cities, thanks to the award. Her "FloodZone" project was published in a widely-praised book by Steidl in 2019. In 2022, Steidl has published a second book – "Floridas: Anastasia Samoylova and Walker Evans," with an essay by David Campany.
