Horizon Fields LXIV (Abstract Vertical Landscape Photo of Golden Reeds in Water)

2017

About the Item

Horizon Fields LXIV (Abstract Vertical Landscape Photograph of Golden Reeds in Water) by Shelly Lependorf & Stan Shire limited edition archival pigment print 39 x 26 inches unframed This image was photographed at the John Heinz Wildlife Refuge in Philadelphia, PA where the artists reside. Lependorf & Shire explore the many layers naturally occurring in nature in this photograph of golden reeds standing in shallow water. The motif that emerges is similar to that of a basket weave. All images are printed with archival inks on on cotton rag, archival paper. About the work: "The foundation for our work is the photographic image with the optimal quality of light. Selecting the interplay of composition, form, rhythm, and line is the focus for our imagery. Integrating these elements in the computer is the next stage in the process of merging our visual and intuitive sensibilities toward a completed vision. Different perceptual effects arise from recording the world in photographs as opposed to interpreting it in paint: Our goal is not to emulate painting. Conceptual work in all mediums has blurred the line between photographers who make art and artists who use photography." The digital medium has established itself in the natural continuum of art history and the ongoing relationship of art with technology. This work forces us to consider a more serene world while reminding us that no contemporary experience is unmediated; technology touches everything. The use of the computer as a tool does not create; it assists creativity resulting in a synthesis of disciplines to be realized as a limited edition. The combination of archival pigment inks on Crane Fine Art paper framed with archival mattes and backboards insures permanence in excess of 175 years. The creative process will always remain in the mind and the soul of the artist. About the artists: Stan Shire is Professor Emeritus and former chair of the Photographic Imaging department at Community College of Philadelphia. He has a BFA degree in Photography and Film from the Philadelphia College of Art (University of the Arts) and a Masters degree in Education from Arcadia University. He has studied with Ansel Adams, Ray K. Metzker, Ron Rosenstock, Bert Monroy and John Paul Caponigro. With Adobe Expert Certification in Photoshop, Stan is the author of “HandsOn Photoshop CS5: Tutorial Workshops.” in print and as an iPad app. His work is in the Mamiya Masters of the Medium Gallery (U.K.), Museo Hollander (Fuengirola, Spain), Blue Cross – Corporate Headquarters, Morgan, Lewis and Bockius, and in other private and corporate collections. Since 2002, Stan has worked in collaboration with painter and printmaker Shelly Lependorf. Their work has been shown in numerous galleries and is represented in many corporate and private collections.
