Xan Padron
"West Village, NYC" Contemporary Figurative Red Framed Photograph on Aluminum

About the Item

"West Village, NYC" is a framed photograph on aluminum by Xan Padron, featuring a compilation of walking figures set against a compelling red wall in Manhattan. Padron's signature technique of splicing together individual photographs to craft a larger composition creates a unique portrait of his locations. The individuals each evoke a sense of wonder as the snapshots provide a glimpse into the lives of those he's photographing. Limited Edition no. 8 of 10. This piece is finished in a smooth silver floater frame. Pricing includes the pictured frame. Unframed dimensions are 47 x 60 inches. This piece is a metal print, created using a process called Dye-Sublimation onto Aluminum. Using this process provides increased durability, with no need for glazing. Archival up to 65+ years. About the artist: Xan Padrón (Galicia, Spain 1969) is a Galician photographer, musician, and composer. The son of an old-school journalist, Xan Padrón grew up used to being the silent observer who sees things quietly and finds stories everywhere. He received his first camera at the age of 13 from his Godfather, who was a photo-journalist. In 1983 he first established his darkroom. As a former professional touring musician, traveling the world with his bass and his camera, he was able to pursue his career as a photographer focused on the people around him. Xan Padrón’s fascination with time and movement, coupled with an uncanny ability to disappear behind the lens, unnoticed by his subjects, brought him to the realization of how much life happens even at the most seemingly insignificant location of a city. His work has been exhibited in Spain, Canada, Israel, and the US and has been published worldwide in books, newspapers, magazines, concert programs, posters, and album covers. Xan Padrón's work is part of collections all over the world in countries such as the US, Canada, China, Netherlands, France, Australia, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Japan, Kenya, Spain, Denmark, etc. Xan Padrón is a resident of New York City where he lives and works with his wife: musician, composer, writer and educator Cristina Pato.

A camera is a window through which a photographer interacts with the world, and it's up to the operator to decide whether his camera will be a barrier or a mirror between he and his subjects. In the 1970s, Michael Abramson chose the latter path when he brought his camera to Pepper's Hideout on Chicago's South Side. Following in the footsteps of his acknowledged influence Gyula Halász, a Hungarian photographer better known as Brassaï who became the pre-eminent chronicler of the Paris nightlife he loved so much, Abramson initiated himself into the nightlife of Chicago's predominantly black neighbourhoods. He was very much a part of the scene he documented on film, drinking, laughing, and dancing with his subjects into small hours and becoming as much a part of the atmosphere as the locals who frequented the same nightspots he did. - Joe Tangari (Numero Group, 2009) This series won Abramson a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1978 and launched his career as a photojournalist. Eventually the project resulted in a hardbound book, Light: On the South Side, including the Grammy and Mojo nominated album, featuring Chicago blues...
