El Anatsui
Paper and Silver by El Anatsui hand-sculpted aluminium sculpture African Art

2024

About the Item

El Anatsui uses typically discarded resources such as liquor bottle caps, cassava graters and newspaper printing plates, to create both floor-based sculptures and shimmering wall pieces that sway and flex like cloth and that defy any categorisation. His use of these materials reflects his interest in reuse, transformation, and an intrinsic desire to connect to his continent while transcending the limitations of place. His work interrogates the history of colonialism and draw connections between consumption, waste, and the environment, but at the core is his unique formal language that distinguishes his practice. El Anatsui Paper and Silver 2024 Inkjet pigment print with irregular hand-cut edges conforming to the image, printed and hand-cut and hand-sculpted aluminum collage, and copper wire 77.5 × 90.2 × 0.6 cm (30.5 × 35.5 × 0.2 in) Signed by the artist on the verso Edition of 30 In mint condition PLEASE NOTE: Images of edition number are example references only. The seller can only provide the specific edition number to buyers at the actual point of sale. Please message the seller to request this information at the point of purchase. The piece is offered unframed. Paper and Silver is made of paper, printed and hand-cut and hand-sculpted aluminium collage, and copper wire. In monochrome groupings of achromatic colors and strands of complex geometric scaffolding composed of vibrant red, yellow, gold, and blue, a dazzling array of formats and elements from the artist's bottle cap palette make up the composition of the artwork. Correspondingly varied in Paper and Silver is the aluminum collage; whereas the printed metal is flattened in some areas, it is folded and twisted and knotted in others. “ Art is a reflection on life. Life isn’t something we can cut and fix. It’s always in a state of flux. „ —El Anatsui
