John Chamberlain Biography
Best known for his sculptures that brought the Abstract Expressionist style into three-dimensional forms, John Chamberlain was born on April 16, 1927 in Rochester, Indiana and grew up in Chicago, Illinois. After serving in the Navy from 1943 to 1946, Chamberlain attended the Art Institute of Chicago from 1951 to 1952. During this time he began to make flat, welded sculpture influenced by the work of David Smith. Chamberlain taught and studied sculpture at Black Mountain College, near Asheville, North Carolina from 1955 to 1956. In 1966, Chamberlain received his first of two John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowships, intended for men and women who have “already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts,” as stated by the foundation.
Building on his earlier welded sculpture, in 1957 Chamberlain began incorporating scrap metal from cars into his work. From 1959 onward, he concentrated on sculpture built entirely of crushed automobile parts. Chamberlain’s first major solo exhibition was held in 1960 at Martha Jackson Gallery, New York. In the early 1960s, Chamberlain’s work was widely acclaimed and his sculpture was included in “The Art of Assemblage” at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1961. Chamberlain showed frequently at the Leo Castelli Gallery, New York, and in 1964, was exhibited at the Venice Biennale.
From 1963 to 1965, Chamberlain experimented with other mediums and created geometric paintings with sprayed automobile paint. In 1966, he began a series of sculptures made of rolled, folded, and tied urethane foam. The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, held a retrospective of his work in 1971, followed by a retrospective held at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, in 1986; the museum co-published, “John Chamberlain: A Catalogue Raisonné of the Sculpture 1954-1985”, authored by Julie Sylvester.
Chamberlain’s work can be found in the permanent collections of the Chinati Foundation, Marfa; the Tate Modern, London; the Moderna Museet, Stockholm; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C; and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, among others.
John Chamberlain passed away on December 21, 2011 in New York City.

John Chamberlain
John Chamberlain, in full John Angus Chamberlain, (born April 16, 1927, Rochester, Indiana, U.S.—died December 21, 2011, New York, New York), American sculptor, painter, printmaker, and filmmaker whose Abstract Expressionist works were characterized by an emotional approach to concept and execution. Chamberlain studied at the Art Institute of Chicago (1951–52), where he began working in metals, and at Black Mountain College in North Carolina (1955–56). In 1957 he had his first one-man show in Chicago. His early pieces were made from welded iron rods, but he later used such materials as heat-shaped Plexiglass, paper, polyurethane, industrial rubber, brown paper bags, and aluminum foil before returning in 1974 to the use of auto body parts. His first sculpture to employ car parts was Shortstop (1957), which featured rusty fenders that he had found in the yard of painter and friend Larry Rivers. Chamberlain’s sculptures are typified by Mr. Press (1961), a construction of fragments from automobiles, crumpled and jammed together to create an effect of isolated, frozen movement. He often coated his pieces with bright industrial paints. During the 1970s oil crisis, Chamberlain often incorporated oil barrels into his work, notably in the series Socket and Kiss (1979). For a brief interlude he used car spray paint to create works that combined stencil and Action painting. Chamberlain was also involved in video and film and produced the cinematic Wide Point (1968); he later dabbled in drawing and printmaking. In 1971 his work was given a retrospective by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City.

- Kimber Smith (Hand signed and inscribed)By Kimber SmithLocated in New York, NYKimber Smith (Hand signed and inscribed), ca. 1974 Offset Lithograph Poster. Hand Signed. Inscribed. Hand signed and inscribed on lower recto (front). Inscription reads: "Greetings to Alan from Kimber" 22 3/8 × 14 7/8 inches Unframed Kimber Smith is a leading American Abstract Expressionist artist who gained early fame in Europe where he befriended Joan Mitchell and Sam Francis when he moved to Paris. He later returned to the US, settling on Southampton. This print is from a Swiss exhibition in the mid 1970s at Galerie Ziegler in Zurich, which, by the way, still sells Smith's works. Kimber Smith signed in pencil and inscribed to his friend and Hampton's neighbor Dr. Alan York. It is extremely rare to find a print like this with an authentic signature and warm inscription by Kimber Smith, with such fine provenance - which makes this such a collectible piece. Optometrist Dr. Alan York of East Hampton a renowned art collector who befriended many of the artists in the area. In a tribute to Dr. York, the East Hampton star writes, "He counted among his patients the artist Willem de Kooning, with whom he spent hours discussing the old masters while watching him paint. Understanding how de Kooning painted helped him make glasses suitable for both his close-up and faraway work..." We don't know if York made Kimber Smith's glasses -- but we do know that he knew him personally, hence the warm inscription. The inscription on the print reads: "Greetings to Alan from Kimber" About Kimber Smith: Kimber Smith (USA; born 1922 Boston, MA; died 1981...Category
