"Thou Shalt Not Bear False Witness Against Thy Neighbor" (The Ninth Commandment)

1987

About the Item

Judy Rifka "Thou Shalt Not Bear False Witness Against Thy Neighbor" (The Ninth Commandment), 1987 6 Color Lithograph on Dieu Donne Handmade Paper 24 × 18 inches Edition Artist's Proof 2/15, aside from the regular edition of 84 Signed and numbered in graphite on the front Unframed This work was created as part of the 1987 portfolio "The Ten Commandments", in which ten top Jewish American artists were each invited to choose an Old Testament commandment to interpret in contemporary lithographic form. The "Chosen" artists were, in order of Commandment: Kenny Scharf, Joseph Nechvatal, Gretchen Bender, April Gornik, Robert Kushner, Nancy Spero, Vito Acconci, Jane Dickson, Judy Rifka and Richard Bosman. This lithograph is in excellent condition; unframed. This is the first time it will have been removed from the original portfolio case. (shown). Lisa Liebmann, who wrote the introduction to the collection, observed: "...The image has, for most of us, replaced the word..." With respect to the present work she writes, "Judith Rivka's image for the NINTH COMMANDMENT - Hebrew lettering, a fluttering line tracing a gesture of brotherhood, abstract planes of light and overlapping colors that could be a metaphor for divulgence - might strike a chord in those familiar with suburban temples of that late 50s or early 60s with their pastel, Chagall-inspired motifs, neoplastic design and their optimism. .." More about Judy Rifka Judy Rifka (b. 1945) is a multi-faceted artist who has worked in a variety of media including painting, printmaking, video art, and sculpture. What characterizes her career above all is an acute sense of humor and openness to chance. In the late 1970s, Rifka was a founding member of the New York-based artist collective Colab, and a leading figure in the No Wave movement. She has been featured in galleries in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Detroit, London, Berlin, Tokyo, and elsewhere, with pieces permanently hanging in the Dallas Museum of Art, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Toledo Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. -Courtesy Tandem Press
