She was part of the new image painting and neo expressionism movements of the 1970s and 1980s, which rejected the principals of minimalism and conceptual art. Chase placed an emphasis on her brush strokes in her works, which often juxtaposed dark images with light color schemes. This unique style often featured partial, almost cartoonish, human forms being absorbed into ominous bodies, characterized by energetic brush work and bold colors. Chase, graduated with a bachelors in printmaking from Syracuse University in 1973, before completing her master’s in fine art from Yale University School of Art in 1975. She would go on to teach at the Rhode Island School of Design from 1975-1979, and at the School of Visual Arts from 1980-1982. During this time, she was also, a National Endowment for the Arts grantee. Her works can be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and the Corcoran Gallery and the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. Untitled Signed in pencil lower right (see photo) Edition: 25 (9/25) (see photo) Engraving, drypoint & carborundum Printed by the artist Condition: Excellent, slight residue on reverse Sheet: 9 7/8 x 12 3/4" Image/Plate: 5 x 7" Note: Goetz was born in the United States, moved to Paris and became a noted Surrealist artist and journalist of the surrealist movement. As a printmaker, Goetz invented carborundum printmaking in the 1960’s. In 1968, La gravure au carborundum, a treatise on carborundum printing, was published by the Maeght Gallery. It was prefaced by Joan Miró. Goetz created many abstract prints using this method. Other artists such as Antoni Clavé, Antoni Tàpies, and in particular Joan Miró, employed carborundum printing in their work. Henri Bernard Goetz (1909-1989) Henri Bernard Goetz was born 29 September 1909 in New York, in a family of French and American origin. He studied at Harvard University and the Grand Central Art School before moving to Paris in 1930 where he continued his studies at the Academies Julian and Academies Ozenfant in Montparnasse. After a brief return to the US in the early 1930’s he settled permanently in France, taking a Parisian studio next to Victor Brauner. With Brauner Goetz became involved with the Surrealist group and was soon a highly accomplished exponent. 1935 would be a year of major importance for Goetz: he exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Surindependants, he married the Dutch painter Christine Boumeester and he met Hans Hartung, who would become a close lifelong friend. In 1937 Goetz held his first solo show at Galerie Van Leer, Paris. During the war, having neglected to become naturalized French citizens, Goetz and Boumeester became illegal aliens and both worked in the resistance movement. They printed leaflets on a simple printing press and created posters to paste...

  • Reflections II
    By Louise Nevelson
    Located in Toronto, Ontario
Caviar20 is excited to be offering this evocative print by the inimitable Louise Nevelson - one of the most revered and unique sculptors of the 20th century. Nevelson is renowned for her mysterious and complex artworks. She was an active printmaker, experimenting with different techniques and approaches while working with some of the best print-making studios in the United States. Nevelson, whether working in sculpture or in two dimensions typically had a strict palette; almost exclusively black. While there are iconic works in white, gold, or raw wood, Nevelson almost entirely avoids color. However during the last decade of her life, her palette expands notably with her printmaking. "Reflections II" is an example from her 1983 portfolio, "Reflections I-V" consisting of six large-scale prints. These prints contains signature elements found throughout Nevelson's prints; ripped or collage-like forms as well as the use of fabric, lace and toile in the printing process. However one of the strongest characteristics of the "Reflections" series is her new uninhibited use of color. Here it is used to maximum effect. This work features unexpected elements of tangerine, translucent Prussian blue, and mint green that punctuate her signature layered collage-like composition. Nevelson's late prints are truly some of her best. Over the last few years, there has been tremendous momentum in both interest and appreciation of Nevelson's work. In May of 2021, a new auction record of $1.35 million was established for one of Nevelson's signature white construction sculptures...
