About the Item
Paul Aizpiri was a painter and sculptor born in 1919 in Paris, France to an Italian mother and a father from the Basque Country, Spain. His signature compositions always had a touch of friendliness with his integration of Fauvism, Expressionism, and Cubism.
In 1936, he started studying at L’École des Beaux-Arts. In 1939 Paul Aizpiri escaped from a German prisoner of war camp in Brittany and made his way back to Paris.
In 1946, he won a prize at the Salon de la Jeune Peinture, and exhibited his works along with those of the most influential post-war painters, including Bernard Buffet and Paul Rebeyrolle. 1956 was the year his path as an artist was altered, that year he met with Foujita, Chaim Soutine, Kees Van Dongen, Maurice Utrillo and Pablo Picasso, who greatly influenced his style and work. Like Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Marc Chagall, Paul Aizpiri belongs to the special category of “Mediterranean Artist,” painters whose works seem to glow with the sun of Southern Europe. From the 1950s, famous galleries all over the world started to invite him for solo exhibitions. In 1996, an Aizpiri museum (Nakata Museum of Art) opened in Japan, which is a rare honor for living artists. was the founder of "Salon des Moins de Trente ans". He was a member of the October Salon since 1945, and was also an active member of "Salon d'Automne", "Salon des Independents" and of the Tullerias. His Works are exhibited permanently at the New Vision Gallery (Jerusalem).

Paul Augustin Aizpiri
Born in 1919 in Paris, Paul Aïzpiri spent time by his father, a sculptor, in the Quartier de Montparnasse where he immersed himself in artistic life. After studied at the Ecole Boulle and worked at the Ateliers Nationaux, he entered the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1936. In 1951, he won the National Prize and represented France at the Venice Biennale. Aïzpiri then became a major figure of the Ecole de Paris and Montparnasse. Between expressionism, fauvism and cubism, his painting always figurative has constantly evolved. Through his canvases, the painter most often celebrates Paris, the Pays-Basque and Saint-Tropez, but also childhood, women and poetry. Award-winning and recognised, the great international museums acquire his paintings, while in Japan, in 1966, a first museum is entirely dedicated to him in Onomichi.

- Michael Gross Israeli Minimalist Conceptual Art, Abstract Jerusalem SilkscreenBy Michael GrossLocated in Surfside, FLMichael Gross (Hebrew: מיכאל גרוס; 1920 – 4 November 2004) was an Israeli painter, sculptor and conceptual artist. Michael Gross was born in Tiberias in the British-administered Palestine in 1920. He grew up in the farming village of Migdal. In 1939-1940, he left to study at the Teachers’ Training College in Jerusalem. In 1939, while he was away, his father was murdered by Arabs, and the family farm and home were destroyed. This event impacted on his work as an artist. From 1943 to 1945, he studied architecture at Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa. From 1951 to 1954, he studied art at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He returned to Israel in 1954 and settled in the artists’ village of Ein Hod. Gross's works are imbued with the light and spirit. They are minimalist, but never pure abstraction, always tied to natural form and laden with feeling. In his early paintings, Gross simplified form in order to concentrate on proportion, broad areas of color, and the size and placement of each element. This reductive process was also notable in his sculptures, whether in painted iron or other materials such as white concrete. In later paintings, he often juxtaposed large off-white panels with patches of tone, adding textured materials such as wooden beams, burlap and rope. Gross’s rough, freely-brushed surfaces, along with the use of soft pastel coloring, conjure up images of the Israeli landscape. Education 1936-1940 Teachers Seminary, Jerusalem 1943-1945, Technion, Haifa, architecture, studied sculpture with Moshe Ziffer. 1951-1954 Beaux Arts, Paris with Michel Guimond Teaching 1954 - 1954 Higher School of Education, Haifa. 1957-1960 Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem 1960-1980 Oranim Art Institute, Tivon Awards 1964: Hermann Struck Prize 1967: Dizengoff Prize 1971...Category
