Richard Anuszkiewicz
Annual Edition, Lt. Ed. 1970s mixed media Op Art silkscreen on board hand signed

1970

About the Item

Richard Anuszkiewicz Annual Edition, 1970 Silkscreen on Masonite Signed and dated in graphite pencil lower right recto. Edition of 100 8 × 5 1/10 × 1/5 inches Unframed Signed and dated in graphite pencil lower right front This silkscreen edition on masonite board looks so much like an. acrylic painting that many auction houses over the years have - incorrectly - sold it as an acrylic painting. Each year over the course of several decades, Op Art pioneer Richard Anuszkiewicz created a different limited edition print for close personal friends, family, and/or individuals who were influential in his career. This early work is the Annual Edition for 1970. Unlike other years, where the silkscreens were printed on board or paper - this one was done on masonite - the same board that he used for his paintings. In fact, it looks so much like a painting, that many reputable auction houses have frequently mis-classified it as an actual painting. It is one of the most desirable of the entire series. A really stunning piece of geometric, 1970s Op Art! Anuszkiewicz's Annual Editions were not created for commercial use and were thus quite scarce, though now a number of these special personal gifts have been entering the secondary market as the artist's friends and associates are, sadly, passing on. This dazzling work is hand signed in pencil with the artist's full name and dated 1970. In 1963 Richard Anuszkiewicz was invited to create the holiday card for the Museum of Modern Art, New York. The small edition was a success and he was made cards for the MoMA again in 1964, 1965 and 1966. After the museum cards, Anuszkiewicz continued producing editions, working with his longtime print partner Norman Lassiter, each year until about 2006. The works typically related to what Anuszkiewicz was doing in his studio at that time. Never available commercially and produced in an edition of 100 or so, the Annual Editions were sent to friends, family and business associates.
