1984

About the Item

Basquiat, Keith Haring, Rammellzee & Lady Pink, ART/New York 1984: Rare historic announcement form for “Graffiti/Post-Graffiti,” a historic 30 minute videotape featuring interviews with Jean-Michel Basquiat, Fred Brathwaite (fab Five Freddy), Futura 2000, Crash, Lady Pink, Rammellzee, Charlie Ahearn, Patti Astor, Tony Shafrazi and Keith Haring. Offset printed folded announcement. Approximately 7 x 11 inches. Fold-line in center as originally issued; otherwise very good condition. Featured as part of the catalog for: Writing the Future, Basquiat and the Hip-Hop Generation (MFA Boston). "Graffiti/Post Graffiti" 1984: Published on the occasion of a 30 minute program about graffiti tracing its evolution from street art to the New York gallery world. "Graffiti/Post Graffiti" was also born out of 'Post Graffiti," a seminal early graffiti exhibition at Sidney Janis Gallery. Footage included Fashion Moda in the South Bronx with a mural by Lady Pink; several outdoor murals by New York graffiti legends Crash and Daze; and interviews at the Fun Gallery with Charlie Ahearn (creator of Wildstyle), and Patti Astor (co-founder of the Fun Gallery) & "Fab 5 Freddy" Braithwaite. Graffiti / Post-Graffiti also featured Keith Haring who was filmed signing hats during the opening of his first solo exhibition at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery. Also included was a short sequence from the historic early Marc Miller interview with Jean-Michel Basquiat, in which Basquiat talks dismissively about his days as SAMO. Jean-Michel Basquiat was an influential African-American artist who rose to success during the 1980s. Basquiat’s paintings are largely responsible for elevating graffiti artists into the realm of the New York gallery scene. His spray-painted crowns and scribbled words referenced everything from his Haitian and Puerto Rican heritage, to political issues, pop-culture icons, and Biblical verse. The gestural marks and expressive nature of his work not only aligned him with the street art of Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf, but also the Neo-Expressionists Julian Schnabel and David Salle. “If you wanna talk about influence, man, then you've got to realize that influence is not influence,” he said of his process. “It's simply someone's idea going through my new mind.” Born on December 22, 1960 in Brooklyn, NY, Basquiat never finished high school but developed an appreciation for art as a youth, from his many visits to the Brooklyn Museum of Art with his mother. His early work consisted of spray painting buildings and trains in downtown New York alongside his friend Al Diaz. The artist’s tag was the now infamous pseudonym SAMO. After quickly rising to fame in the early 1980s, Basquiat was befriended by many celebrities and artists, including Andy Warhol, with whom he made several collaborative works. At only 27, his troubles with fame and drug addiction led to his tragic death from a heroin overdose on August 12, 1988 in New York, NY. The Whitney Museum of American Art held the artist’s first retrospective from October 1992 to February 1993. In 2017, after having set Basquiat’s auction record the previous year with a $57.3 million purchase, the Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa surpassed it, buying the artist’s Untitled (1982) at Sotheby's for $110.5 million. This set a new record for the highest price ever paid at auction for an American artist's work. Today, Basquiat's works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Rubell Family Collection in Miami, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, among others.

John Baldessari at Marian Goodman Gallery New York, 1999: Rare vintage original 1990s exhibition poster to commensurate the opening of 'John Baldessari, The Tetrad Series', 1999 at Marian Goodman Gallery.' This piece features a grid of four images and, in traditional Baldessari style, presents photography, text and a nod to painting. Vintage poster. Dimensions: 18 x 18 inches (9 x 9 inches folded closed). Good overall condition; fold-lines as originally issued; minor signs of handling & light wear to folds. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Rare. John Baldessari: It is hard to characterize John Baldessari's varied practice—which includes photomontage, artist’s books, prints, paintings, film, performance, and installation—except through his approach of good-humored irreverence. Baldessari is commonly associated with Conceptual or Minimalist art, though he has called this characterization “a little bit boring.” His two-dimensional works often incorporate found images, composed in layers or presented as distinct pieces with an element of surprise, like a brightly colored geometric shape in the place of a face or a starkly printed sardonic caption. Baldessari has demonstrated a lasting interest in language and semantics, articulating these concerns through the use of puns or the juxtaposition of seemingly unrelated images and words, as in his 1978 work Blasted Allegories. His self-referencing photomontages and use of text have been sources of inspiration for countless artists, including Cindy Sherman, David Salle, and Barbara Kruger. Baldessari identifies his own artistic lineage, saying, "I would prefer to go to the source with Duchamp rather than credit Warhol as an influence." Related Categories: John Baldessari prints.
