About the Item
The portrait of the David Hockney’s mother featured on this vintage David Hockney poster is currently on view at the National Portrait Gallery’s exhibition David Hockney: Drawing from Life. This poster was created for the exhibition 'Hockney's Progress: Paintings, Drawings, Prints, Theatre Designs', held at the Graves Art Gallery in Sheffield, 19 September - 26 October 1980. Hockney has been an avid portraitist throughout his career, drawing and painting subjects ranging from his mother and Celia Birtwell, to art dealer Larry Gagosian and artist John Baldessari. Here his life-long muse is painted in sepia ink, donning a fur hat and round-collared coat. Her twinkling eyes gaze tenderly at the artist. The affection shared between mother and son is evident in this thoughtful and tender portrait.
