The artwork shows a night scene in which a woman is depicted, full length in profile, in a dark coloured gown with a train, and large Edwardian hat.
The illustration was realized for 'The Yellow Book' entitled 'A Night Piece'. Great Britain, 1894. The Yellow Book was a periodical published in London during the late 1800s. Edited by Aubrey Beardsley, the publication was a collection of short stories, poetry, artwork, and other artistic and literary works. Editor Beardlsey was also a regular contributor of artwork to the book, and his drawings were intended to shock readers with their grotesque nature
Aubrey Vincent Beardsley (21 August 1872 – 16 March 1898) was an English illustrator and author. His drawings, executed in black ink and influenced by the style of Japanese woodcuts, emphasized the grotesque, the decadent, and the erotic. He was a leading figure in the Aesthetic movement which also included Oscar Wilde and James A. McNeill Whistler. Beardsley's contribution to the development of the Art Nouveau style and the poster movement was significant, despite the brevity of his career before his early death from tuberculosis.
