19th Century

About the Item

Self-portrait with Raised Sabre is an engraving on ivory-colored paper realized by Charles Amand Durand after an etching by Rembrandt dated 1634. This wonderful piece of art belongs to an edition of the late 19th century. Good conditions. Rembrandt known simply as Rembrandt (Leiden, 15 July 1606 - Amsterdam, 4 October 1669), was a Dutch painter and engraver. He is generally considered to be one of the greatest painters in European art history. Having achieved great success as a portrait painter from a young age. His drawings and paintings were already popular during his lifetime. Rembrandt's greatest creative triumphs are especially evident in the portraits of his contemporaries, his self-portraits, and illustrations of scenes from the Bible. In both painting and printing, he exhibited a thorough knowledge of classical iconography. Charles Amand Durand (1831-1905) Eager to save the masterpieces of the Great Masters of Graphics of the Modern Age, whose plates already at the time of Durand were for the most part irreparably compromised, Durand dedicated a major part of his life to recreating in exact detail the engraved plates of Rembrandt & other old Masters. His work was recognized as innovative and of high quality not only by scholars and dealers, but also by important European art institutions.
