Revered for his minimalist and reductionist influences, Knoebel explores the interplay of colors as structured forms. This relationship between the different shapes and colors emphasizes both contrast and precision and allow the artist to solidify the emotions he arouses in the viewer through his deceptively simplified style. His unique and impeccable style has been defined by the recurring “Messerschnitt” or “knife cuts” that produce abstractly expressive shapes.
"I don’t want to enter into [an] abstraction, into true non-representationalism" - Imi Knoebel
The response to his art is intensified by rich colour which often overrides the simplicity of the forms. Simultaneously, Knoebel succeeds in creating a dialogue between painting and sculpture with the flow of his brushstroke visible across the surface of his minimalist arrangements. Frequently working in groups or series, Knoebel revisits certain themes and materials time and again at different points in his career, as in the case of Una´s Haus, which follows in the artist´s exploration of architectural concerns.
IMI KNOEBEL
Imi Knoebel was born in Dessau in 1940. He studied under Joseph Beuys at the Staatliche Kunstakademie, Düsseldorf, where he still lives and works. Since the 1960s, Imi Knoebel has continuously developed his emphatically minimalist oeuvre. Beginning in 1964, when he was a student of Joseph Beuys, his analytical work series have reflected a growing concern with the interplay of color and form.
“I thought: everything has been done already. Yves Klein has painted his canvas blue, Lucio Fontana has cut slashes into his. What’s left? If you want to do something, to stay alive, you have to think of something at least as radical." -Imi Knoebel
Knoebel’s practice is resolutely formal, exploring the effect and power of colour and materials in ways that continue the gestures and investigations of Modernism, in particular drawing influence from the geometrical abstractions of Malevich and Mondrian. His work is open-ended, it rejects any notions of spirituality potentially attached to pure abstraction. Frequently working in groups or series, Knoebel revisits certain themes and materials time and again at different points in his career. His work is represented in some of the most important public collections including: Dia: Beacon and Dia Art Foundation, Berardo Museum, Lisbon; Broad Contemporary Art Museum, Santa Monica; Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; MOMA, New York; MOCA, Los Angeles; Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid; MMK Frankfurt; Norton Museum, West Palm Beach; Sammlung Goetz, Munich , and many others.

Imi Knoebel
Imi Knoebel is a German painter and sculptor known for his contributions to and the shaping of 20th century minimalist abstract art. Often working with large-scale modular shapes, Knoebel’s work is regarded as an ongoing, elliptical investigation into formalism and the medium of painting itself. Born in Dessau, Germany in 1930, he went on to study at the Darmstadt School of Arts and Crafts and the famed Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he befriended Joseph Beuys and Blinky Palermo. Though his early work was often monochromatic, Knoebel became interested in the teachings of renowned colorist Johannes Itten, and much of his later work is characterized by its bright palette and strong color relationships. One of his best-known pieces, “24 Colors for Blinky” (1977)—made in memoriam of his friend’s untimely death—consists of a irregularly shaped panels each painted in a specific, memorable hue, and is featured in the permanent collection of Dia:Beacon in upstate New York. Knoebel has been the subject of solo exhibitions at such institutions as the Haus der Kunst in Munich, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin.

Inscribed bottom: 6/50, Little Owl - For Naomi Rosenblum, T. Engelland, 06 This "Little Owl" print was produced as a "thank you" for those who attended or purchased paintings at a show in New York. The key block originally appeared as an illustration for The O-O's Party by Paul Muldoon - published by The Gallery Press, Ireland. Redesigned to accommodate a tonal block, it is limited to an edition of fifty signed copies, printed by the artist on a 19th century proof press with archival inks and papers. A lifelong artist, Engelland specialized in oil portraits and landscapes, and also worked extensively in woodcuts and linocuts. He was born on Jan. 5, 1950, in Ames, Iowa, the son of Charles Wilbur “Will” Engelland and Patricia Fairman Engelland.. Tim grew up in Terre Haute, IN, attending Fairbanks Elementary School and Indiana State University’s Laboratory School. He knew he wanted to be an artist from an early age, and was mentored by Lab School’s John Laska, graduating in 1968. He received a BFA from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art; was a Norfolk Fellow at Yale University; and received his MFA from Cornell University, teaching there for two years after graduation. He spent the majority of his career, from 1976-2004, at Deerfield Academy, a prestigious preparatory school in Deerfield, Mass. There he taught art and photography, coached basketball and lacrosse, and served as faculty resident. When the school began accepting female students, Tim designed The Deerfield Girl, a bronze statue to accompany The Deerfield Boy statue standing in the school’s Memorial Building. Along with John O’Brien and Peter Fallon, Tim founded the Deerfield Press, publisher of limited-edition illustrated poems and stories; James Dickey, John McPhee, and Seamus Heaney are among the authors whom the Press published. For several decades, Tim served on the faculty at the Advanced Placement Summer Institute in St. Johnsbury, Vt., and as a consultant to the College Board. He spent sabbaticals in New York City and Boston, and he has exhibited in galleries in those cities and many other venues. His work can be found in the National Library of Ireland, Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, and in private collections worldwide. In 2004, Tim returned to Indiana. - ManBy Elizabeth CatlettLocated in Missouri, MOElizabeth Catlett “Man” 1975 (The Print Club of Cleveland Publication Number 83, 2005) Woodcut and Color Linocut Printed in 2003 at JK Fine Art Editions Co., Union City, New Jersey Signed and Dated By The Artist Lower Right Titled Lower Left Ed. of 250 Image Size: approx 18 x 12 inches Elizabeth Catlett (1915-2012) is regarded as one of the most important women artists and African American artists of our time. She believed art could affect social change and that she should be an agent for that change: “I have always wanted my art to service black people—to reflect us, to relate to us, to stimulate us, to make us aware of our potential.” As an artist and an activist, Catlett highlighted the dignity and courage of motherhood, poverty, and the working class, returning again and again to the subject she understood best—African American women. The work below, entitled, “Man”, is "carved from a block of wood, chiseled like a relief. Catlett, a sculptor as well as a printmaker, carves figures out of wood, and so is extremely familiar with this material. For ‘Man’ she exploits the grain of the wood, allowing to to describe the texture of the skin and form vertical striations, almost scarring the image. Below this intense, three-dimensional visage parades seven boys, printed repetitively from a single linoleum block in a “rainbow roll” that changes from gold to brown. This row of brightly colored figures with bare feet, flat like a string of paper dolls, raise their arms toward the powerful depiction of the troubled man above.” Biography: Elizabeth Catlett (1915-2012) Known for abstract sculpture in bronze and marble as well as prints and paintings, particularly depicting the female figure, Elizabeth Catlett is unique for distilling African American, Native American, and Mexican art in her work. She is "considered by many to be the greatest American black sculptor". . .(Rubinstein 320) Catlett was born in Washington D.C. and later became a Mexican citizen, residing in Cuernavaca Morelos, Mexico. She spent the last 35 years of her life in Mexico. Her father, a math teacher at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, died before she was born, but the family, including her working mother, lived in the relatively commodious home of his family in DC. Catlett received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Howard University, where there was much discussion about whether or not black artists should depict their own heritage or embrace European modernism. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1940 from the University of Iowa, where she had gone to study with Grant Wood, Regionalist* painter. His teaching dictum was "paint what you know best," and this advice set her on the path of dealing with her own background. She credits Wood with excellent teaching and deep concern for his students, but she had a problem during that time of taking classes from him because black students were not allowed housing in the University's dormitories. Following graduation in 1940, she became Chair of the Art Department at Dillard University in New Orleans. There she successfully lobbied for life classes with nude models, and gained museum admission to black students at a local museum that to that point, had banned their entrance. That same year, her painting Mother and Child, depicting African-American figures won her much recognition. From 1944 to 1946, she taught at the George Washington Carver School, an alternative community school in Harlem that provided instruction for working men and women of the city. From her experiences with these people, she did a series of paintings, prints, and sculptures with the theme "I Am a Negro Woman." In 1946, she received a Rosenwald Fellowship*, and she and her artist husband, Charles White, traveled to Mexico where she became interested in the Mexican working classes. In 1947, she settled permanently in Mexico where she, divorced from White, married artist Francisco Mora...Category
