Joan Miró
Ubu aux Baléares (Ubu of The Balearic Islands), 1971

1971

About the Item

Expressing the playful and vibrant quality of Miró's work, this piece uses minimal detail and shape in a delicate balance of color and line. Using a lyrical quality of shape, the viewer can imagine this image as a constellation in the sky or cave art from the prehistoric era. Nicolas and Elena Calas stated of this series, "Miró's Ubu aux Baléares could be taken for graffiti in which face and body are reduced to circular and angular outlines; the limbs to straight or curved lines; eyes indicated by tiny circles and a nose by a narrow triangle. Upon closer scrutiny each print is a deft composition in which the black lines and white space within and between the figures is carefully balanced. A seemingly endless variety of grotesque encounters unfold while we slowly turn the pages. Miró draws the comic situation from the banalities of comedy." (Maeght IV 17) Created in 1971, this color lithograph is from an album of twenty-three lithographs by the same title. Printed by Mourlot, Paris, this work was published by Téade, Paris and printed on Arches vellum. This work is hand-signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 - Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right and numbered from the Roman numeral edition of VI in pencil in the lower left, aside from the numbered edition of 120. • L'efant aux biscuit (Child with Cookie)
    By Pierre-Auguste Renoir
    Located in Palo Alto, CA
An intimate portrait of his second son, Jean Renoir (1894 – 1979), evokes a childlike sentiment and love that Renoir had for his children. Most likely no more than age 3, Jean is shown here with a cookie, beneath a frilly bonnet characteristic of late 19th century French society. His pink, rosy cheeks are defined with rich, glowing hues that contrast from the pale yellow and grey background in which he rests. Jean was also featured in a family portrait of the Renoirs, titled La Famille de l’Artiste (1896). Created in 1899, this Color Lithograph on Cream Laid Paper is from the edition of 100, from the unpublishedL’Album d’estampes originales de la Galerie Vollard; printed by Auguste Clot, Paris. Catalogue Raisonné: It is fully documented and referenced in the below catalogue raisonnés and texts (copies will be enclosed as added documentation with the invoices that will accompany the final sale of the work): 1.
