Pablo Picasso
Portrait de Familie Ingresque

1962

About the Item

Pablo Picasso, Portrait de Familie Inqresque, 1962, Lithograph, 75.6 x 55.8 cm. Baer knows of only 7 prints of the sheet and suspects 2 additional copies by the printer Fernand Mourlot. Splendid, chalky print with the probably full margin, below and above with the scoop margin. In Mougins near Cannes, Picasso created a series of lithographs and linocuts on the theme "Portrait de Famille Ingresque" between June 21 and July 6, 1962. His repeated treatment of this composition shows the special significance it had for him at the time. As the title suggests, the inspiration was a drawing of the Forestier family by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres from 1806, which Picasso knew from the Louvre. His print shows Ingres' fiancée Julie Forestier with her two parents, an uncle, and the maid. Picasso radically repositions the figures in his print and invents an entirely different narrative. While Ingres places his fiancée in the center of the picture, where she is flanked on either side by her seated parents, Picasso places the elderly couple in this central position, while the young woman on the right edge of the picture, like the elderly, looks into the darkness on the left of the picture.
