Pablo Picasso
Pour Roby, Pablo Picasso

1969

About the Item

Very little need to be said of the legendary Picasso. This original Etching "Pour Roby" (For Roby) is a classic example of his genius. Picasso originally drew this portrait for a friend, author Robert Godet, also known as Roby. He later etched the portrait onto a printing plate so that Roby could include the print in his book L’Age de Soleil. He chose to exactly replicate the drawing in reverse (a mirror view) applying a precious quality to the limitation of lines. Signed and titled in the copper plate by Picasso, both the artist's signature and the title of the piece are reversed in the print. In the 1960s the Collectors’ Guild was working with various ateliers and print shops in Paris, especially those that specialized in original fine art printing of lithographs and etchings. In the 1960’s the leading etching printer was Monsieur Leblanc, who printed etchings for all the outstanding artists. The Collectors’ Guild produced a great deal of work with Monsieur Leblanc. He had the etching plate for Picasso’s “Pour Roby.” In 1950, Leblanc printed the 1st edition of "Pour Roby" in an edition size of 100 for Picasso, and in turn Picasso gifted the plate to Leblanc in appreciation for his work. Subsequently, The Collectors’ Guild was able to purchase the original plate from Leblanc, and a second edition was created in 1969. PABLO PICASSO (1881-1973) Spanish painter and sculptor is one of the most recognized figures of twentieth century art. During his artistic career, which lasted more than 75 years, he created thousands of works using all kinds of mediums. He changed art more profoundly than any other artist of his time. First famous for pioneering cubism, Picasso continued to develop his art with a pace and vitality comparable to the accelerated technological and cultural changes of the twentieth century. Each change embodied a radical idea, and might be said that Picasso lived several artistic lifetimes. Original Limited Edition Etching on Arches paper, 1969. Edition Size: Unknown. Paper Size: 12.875" x 10." Image Size: 9" x 7." Catalog No. Bloch 680. Signed by the artist in the plate before going to print. Published by the Collectors Guild. In his exploration of fame, he would occasionally dip into the pool of politics and politicians. In the last year before his death in 1987, using a photograph by Philipp Schönborn, Warhol centered his attention on one of his final subjects - Vladimir Lenin. Known as one of the most influential political figures of the 20th century, Lenin was the undisputed political engineer and founder of the one-party socialist state. Lenin played a pivotal role in changing the course of Russian history...

Aimed as a form of cultural criticism, the artist often targets established social and political agendas with his witty illustrations produced with stencils and spray paint in cities such as New Orleans, New York, and Paris. “The art world is the biggest joke,” he said. “It’s a rest home of the over privileged, the pretentious, and the weak.” Although details of the artist’s life are largely unknown, it is thought that Banksy was born in Bristol, United Kingdom, c. 1974, starting his career as a graffiti artist in the city. Better Out Than In, Banksy’s month-long residency in New York during October 2013, featured a man hawking the artist’s paintings for $60 a piece outside Central Park. In 2015, Banksy opened Dismaland Bemusement Park, a temporary art exhibition that functioned as a theme park. After a 36-day run, its workers and materials were sent to the Calais migrant camp in France to build additional housing. Among the artist's most famous stunts include his shredded painting: When a painting by Banksy was sold at auction for $1.4 million in 2018, a mechanism was triggered to cause the artwork to partially destroy itself, resulting in a new piece titled Love in the Bin (2018). The ongoing question as to who Banksy is continued to reach the headlines when in 2017 Robert Del Naja...
